Hi there,

does anybody knows a link where I can find a transposition table for minor scales? I mean a table that shows me the main chords of each scale with their harmonic function? I searched the net but only found these kind of tables for major scales.

Thanks for the links. Actually I still haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. I want just an overview table to print and stick at the wall. Like that one for major scales:

@billy ambulance: I have no idea what you mean. What scale box?

Hello inner alchemy,

the tables for major scales is ok for transposing minor scales.

Check this :

C , D, E , F , G , A , B is the major natural scale

A , B , C , D , E , F , G is the minor natural scale (relative minor scale from the major scale in C)

so when you are (for exemple) in E minor scale the relative major scale is G , so is possible to use the table for the G major scale into the E minor scale harmonic system.

E minor is the same scale of G major , the difference is the starting note of the scale,
usual this note give you the tonality for the part/track

major chord sequence : (good luck)

harmonization the differents degrees of the C major scale

Cmaj7 , Dmin7, Emin7 , Fmaj7 , G7 , Amin7 (rel min) , Bmin7b5

Minor chord sequence :

Amin7 , Bmin7b5 , Cmaj7 (rel maj) , Dmin7 , Emin7 , Fmaj7 , G7

each chords is with 4 notes, for make a normal chord you need work with this degres into any scale :

1,3,5,7

exemples :

for the Emin7 chords the notes are : E (1) , G (3) , B (5) , D (7)

for Fmin7 the notes are : F , Ab , C , Eb

all the exemples are for the natural scales,

we have into this world a lot off differents scales.

from mister BACH (18century) in europe we use this 3 harmonic system :

major/minor natural scales (C,D,E,F,G,A,B)major or (A,B,C,D,E,F,G)minor

minor harmonic scale in C : (C , D , Eb , F , G , Ab , B)

minor melodic scale in C : (C, D , Eb , F , G , A , B)

So we have in europe 21 diferents main scales or 21 diferents chords, in 3 main harmonic systems.

The theory for the major main scale is the same for all the others , you need only transpose & make the good analisis of the Harmonic changes.

Sorry for my bad english , i hope is possible to understand.

Hi Margherita,

thanks a lot. I understood quite well because I remembered that I learned that theory all once.
So its always min, dim , maj , min , min , maj , maj.
The 7th tone is the domoinant chord for the minor scale...this I remember...and it is a major 7 chord...
arrrrrhhhhh....I find this theory all so boring and complicate. I just want this table to look up which chords I have for the scale I use without thinking about it

indeed, there are a few very simple rules around which everything is made, and u have the looknohands site if u don't wanna use ur brainpower. In fact, jazz-rules (and therefore also pop-rules) are much more complicated, because jazz was invented by people who couldn't read notes and didn't know the rules, they had to invent rules that would describe what they do, and because of that those rules are overly complex (and silly, if u consider the inventors of the genre, but jazz is intellectual wankers music anyway these days)

inner alchemy don't get too frustrated...

find the melody first. then look at what notes you are playing. they should be able to "tell" you what scale you are using.

once you find the complete scale (all 7 notes) you're done. starting from the note of the chord you want to play and marking it as (1) you can simply choose notes (3) (5) (7), play them all together and u got your chord (like margheritta very well describes). or start variating, by playing notes (1) (3) (5) (5octavedown), or (1) (5) (7octavedown) (1octaveup).

so, it's all about finding the scale! and (please correct me if i am wrong) but i think the scale determines if your chord will be a major or a minor, not vice versa. personally, i write the melody first, then try to find which scale i am on (by finding the 7 notes that make the scale, and which will deffinetely be part of the melody of course), and then "get" the chords from the scale.

good luck!           .
