Transient shaping question

hello friends, I have been reading online on other forums and stuff about percussion processing and I come across people using "transient shapers". I read more and I am left with the question: how is transient shaping different from just adjusting the attack of the ASDR on the sample?

thanks...           --

I don't think it really differs, but I can be wrong here. If you have loaded a sample in a sampler the ADSR will work as a transient shaper. If you have an audio channel you can use a plugin TS to do the work for you.

try to compare mate and see ,maybe you can get very similar result. personaly i never had convaincing result with transient shaper except when used lightly. i like more a compressor (transient shapers are kind of comps probably too..or a volume envelop dunno)

with comp if you want more click or define well the transient, you use fast attack and make it slower until you are in the sweet spot.

its really cool for adding pluck, punch and stuff like that not depending on the adsr waves transient shapers don't have threshold and you have the multiband one which is very defferent. Its pretty much the same as adsr but its another adsr over your existing one and really fast one. Also a difference from compressor really fast settings on an upwards compressor setting will bring distortion and something in the algo is defferent then the transient shaper that sounds exactly like upward compression and the result is more snappy then the regular comression with only letting the snappy peak to come through so it sounds more like upward compression only on the transient.
Try out

Also dont forget the gate effect for shaping transients where you can also adjust the background bleeding. Works great on drums you can really pronounce the attack of the sound or you can move it in a background when needed. If you have too sharp attack sometimes they wont fit your groove but when you make them more smooth they can fit easier.

Here is a transient shaper, try sticking this on a bass; it seem to makes it more upright.

i used more transient shaper to smooth transient insteed of boosting them personally..now have better tools for this.

smoothing the transient of some sounds so they can accept compression better ,it can result with more glue in the mix..but i dont like sharp sound with big transients..i like round and phat that make you want to turn the volume up and sound massive over sharp and thin that make you turn it down cause it s agressive, thats can be a major difference between analog and digital mix, transients are not rounded and musically pleasant ,it hapen naturally with some gears,in the box you have to work on it...but here it s more about taste of sound ...

it s the first milliseconds of a sound, can be one of the most important part of a sound for our ears.

with transient designers you can boost the transient to make a sound more percussive, or lower it to soften the attack of a sound.

it change the dynamic yes, you boost the first peaks of a sound or lower them
