trance styles are just attempts to describe music.

The map is not the territory... but this does not mean the map is useless.

Well, since we have decided to turn this to the subject of linguistics, words are the signifiers for real and abstract things. Our minds are permanently detached from the essence of the subject. The words will always be biased and somewhat inaccurate. So why not just except this imperfection of the tool and try not to get hung up on it. As for genre's, fuck em we don't need anymore pigeonholing in trance music, the 4/4 beat is already constricting enough.

Words can only point you toward the Truth. They are not the truth by themselves |

i think thats the basic conservative point i would make. but i also go further after deciding that words can actually harm- cause someone not to listen to something they might like because of the labelling on it
people who say they like a genre and not specific tracks in it are rather um lost i would say... (slaves?)
by the way- great Goa Set in Toronto!
nice to meet you briefly.
i really like how you found all the really killer old tunes like Tandu "alien pump" etc... nice one! |

I agree that this labeling is stupid so lets just stick to what it actually is, Techno. Sound that is made from a computer.
What type of sound do you like? Not all the Techno artist will get pissed at you for describing a sound or putting their so called music in a label..
Oh, its a 4/4 sound. No, its the sound of a Techno musician beating their meat against their software. Any sound can be music and can be labeled whatever anyone wishes.
Where's the map to this music law? What truth lies between most techno artist and real musician? One who can perform without a power supply.
Seriously, what truth are you kids seeking in all this anyway? So what someone calls this sound which is music and happens to have many style's like Ghetto-psy. So, an artist with an ego or their friend gets pissed off because someone dares to put their sound in a category. Stop defending what people have already labeled. Its not like your going to change anything. If you disagree with the labeling then maybe you should improve your sound or ears to where you don't get labeled.
Music theory is a good place to wash your headaches away if your so upset by less than 1% of the world opinions here in techno(psy) world.
Get your 2cents in here or write another track it will last longer. How long is the funny part. |

Aaron, regarding missing out on a music because of blunt dismissal based on labeling, I still say it depends who it is you're getting your recommendation from and if you know or trust or respect their taste or not.
If Julius Lehmuskallio or Simo Ojala told me about a full on artist that's really good I would jump on it in a second. If Lawrence Paradigm told me about a full on artist that's really good I would burp and walk away.

Thanks Aaron, and it was good meeting you too, and nice set! Real psychedelic for a change (from some of the other artists that come through Toronto).
I think I see what you mean about the danger of words... they are just tools, but tools can be used to build walls or bridges. We've got to be aware of how these mental constructs are deployed.
