Look there is no one "trance software" (well mayby Reason). U have different progs that do different stuff. Like real studio gear you need two basic things: 1) a synth-Rebirth & Reason..both by steinberg (propellerheads). 2) a sequencer- Cubase (steinberg) and Acid pro` (sonic foundry). When U have these youll learn what else you want to add and do with the sounds! Hope I helped & good luck! |

The Tranciest software of all is called "saiko" It can be found at: www.arguru.com It creates random psychedelic noises, like those cool sinewaves that Astral Projection like to put in their tracks. |

You can argue til the cows come home whether a synthezier/sampler delivers a better sound than a computer.
However, I believe one of the biggest issues to think about, is the interface for these machines... the computer's interface, mac or pc, bites compared to the agile knobs and sliders on custom designed music making machines...

I agree.. when I used the desks that interface with the puta/software it was a pleasure.
I have seen some of the new consoles which basically has a generic face that the LED's indicate which mode/effect/channel strip you are operating with a central control panel.. pity they have a 6 digit price tag which puts them in studio world.. if someone could create a generic console to control the software synth with a realistic price it would move my world.. |

I'm using a Yamaha Rm1x and a Roland sp808... both of these machines seem, on first glance, to be toy-like (the main reason i bought them) in that they have heaps of pretty knobs, lights, sliders and buttons - however, all these machines, regardless of how they look and how they are marketted, have a kicking synth/sampler core inside - they will produce the same quality of sounds as the more clunky racks etc, whereas the usability remains high...
These machines are out at 4 figure prices. not too bad i reckon.

Both your Rm1x and the roland e-mix studio are definitely NOT toys! (and they are not marketed as such) They are Dance oriented 'all-in-one' production tools, and can be used alone as a workstation or in a project studio. their price rates are well in the analog modeling tags. (where you have a preset sample sound and you can change it in an analog style, not like the top priced virtual analog devices like the virus/nord/waldorf etc. which synthesized the sound)
BTW all the "pretty" knobs are part of a stage thats brings us back to the comfort analog-like on-hand real-time control. again, not a toy. :) |

go to: http://www.fruityloops.com download fruity loops, look for trance samples over the web, and try do something original, in it, it's a very easy program, it's a bit hard to do good trance music on it, but i'm sure you'll overcome it. |

The creation method (pattern based) in fruity loops is very appealing and its really easy to create electronic music with it. its true that the sound have some limitations.
you have the same creation method and even better in the RM1x. its really a superb tool for house. But i dont really know if it fits to trance, maybe as a drum machine, or as an external Sequencer to use with other synths like the virus.

not toys huh? this is true, and i suggested this - by the the fact that i bought them, and use them. I do believe, more so than any other synth, they're marketted as toys...
what else is 'emix studio' and it's 'revolutionary translucent design' and it's flashing lights and nifty d-beam - (that's just 2 knobs being replaced by carcinogenic lasers!)
and the remix station with and it's animated boot up sequence, more flashing lights?
what are these things for? making better music?
hehe... not likely, they're to make them look cool!
the simplicity that they setup the live play back allows for easy fun, which seems like a toy to me.

Well... :) I dont think yamaha wants anyone to refer their Pro products as toys (they have a hole different section for those one :) )
and almost every machine i know has a flashy boot up screen and cool lights (look at the nord3!!)
I think that the RM1x is the most professional and innovative tool of its "gooveboxy" kind (maybe except the yamaha RS7000) and your right about the silly D-beam and chaos pads... but who knows? maybe the future of buttons is fading... :) NNNAAAA.....

Agreed.
Speaking of toys, the other part of my live setup is an alesis air fx unit, for exaggerating breaks and certain lead sections...
and this guy is a dbeam with 3 variables - now, this is the ultimate toy, however it is justified - with one hand you can do what 3 knobs can do in one motion!
I vouch for this guy 100%.
