Apparently several superstar DJ's have lent their support to the website, could you tell us a bit more about this?
Sure. We have three "Superstar" DJ's as partners in Beatport. Richie Hawtin, John Acquaviva and Bad Boy Bill. Rich and John because of their relationship with Final Scratch and Bill because of our relationship with him. His road manager is actually from Denver. From that, we've been able to get other "Superstar" DJ's to support us. (...) In any industry that is driven by Icons, we wanted to align ourselves with the people that are driving the industry forward.

i think that quality of music cant be measured on the fact in which software is made.. every program is more or less equally effective and productive. it all depends from artist to artist. deadmau5 have really good sound tho

All this jazz about psy being under rated and this and that... could have been avoided... had most of the labels who are doing reasonably well stock up their titles there. It's one thing to be traditionalist... and one thing to be market savvy.
I mean cmmon.. all the other genres realised tht the cd market is kinda dead anyways.... so they go this way..... and it works for them... thts y other genres like prog house/techno do very well and even to an extent more underground genres like breaks and DnB still do comparatively better than Psy... even considering the fact that the market reach of breaks and DnB isnt that big as Psy... considering the way it has spread all around the world.
I seriously feel that it would be a lot better if all the good labels stock up there. Release singles and ep's... try something out of the box for a change. As of now, records dont sell much.... but change something... and u never know ...things cld change.
If it works for the others... i dont see any reason why it shldnt work even marginally better for our lil scene.
My cent....

About this whole competition, thanks for the kind remarks but I don't really relate to it, neither I used the slogans or posters to publish it, exactly same as I don't like the DJ Mag competition, in the end of the day it doesn't show anything but talent of marketing in most of the cases.
About Beatport "hating" psy music, I wouldn't go that far actually. I think that indeed Psy is under rated in Beatport, but I think there is good reason for it actually. In many cases Psy represents very "non musical" music genre, and many times the production of the music is pretty shallow and samey. One could say that other genres represented on Beatport boast relatively more exciting compositions in general. Also Psy sells very little in comparison to other genres, so it makes sense that in the world where sales is the main attribute, those that sell the least would be in the end of the wishlist of the owner of the site, especially that the amount of small labels in Trance is simply never ending.
Having said that, it's nice, that finally progressive is counted for Psy in the Trance world. Few years ago it would be dismissed as Housey Club music at best, by the Trance headz. Also from playing around in the last years, I could see the change. Yeah there is little bit of Psy in what we do..

cool. interesting info. i guess i was talking out of my ass from what i heard from a friend who works with them directly. is nothing run from 2 guys in colorado then?
i dont think they hate psy because "it sucks etc"... lots of music sucks and they still sell it on beatport.
but anyway- its natural that a club music oriented music site will prefer more progressive or minimal psy than not.
whether that makes you feel more approval from your fellow psy heads is a different question. why do you care who approves of what and who is beatport to matter in the perception of psy prog among psy heads?
i dont think psy dj's care much about beatport vs minimal or electro dj's etc..
out of the club oriented musics they focus on, popularity is the issue for polls like this hence more commercial acts vs underground acts. (think electro vs minimal...commercial vs subtle in a different arena) |
