I've been listening to this track by Heartthrob, a big minimal techno producer, and I can't help but think it sounds like it would be right at home on a nighttime psy dancefloor..

Well I think the influence has gone back and forth a number of times already, in the late nineties minimal techno make its great breaktrough, then in the early 2000's psy projects like spirallianz, son kite, ticon, NASA, kruger, and also some "dark" projects like the delta experimented a lot with minimal styles.
Then we all know the story, son kite -> Minilogue, and spirallianz - > extrawelt, both projects have had a great impact on the techno scene.
Add to that that in the late 1990's when trance got too cheesy many trance dj's jumped the sinking boat and went in to producing other genres: sasha, digweed, holden, marc romboy, stephan bodzin all of them have trance in their blood. Their techno its totally trancey in comparision to the stuff on labels as Minus.
The trend that began with "The sky was pink" give birth to a whole melodic techno revolution, labels as traum, wagon repair and Cocoon have realesed techno that is well deep in to trance territory.
Sven vath for example, to this day you know that he is still a trance dj, all cocoon compilations are full of hypnotic songs.
Trance and Techno are a powerfull couple indeed when you choose pure breeds from both.
"The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

Good reply! "Minimal" was already a fusion between minimal techno & click/microhouse, and as posted above Extrawelt & Nathan Fake kickstarted the whole neotrance thing.
Also take a look at Nachtstrom Schallplatten, who tend towards the more technoid side of things (VX). I've found that psytrancers love themselves some techno, as long as you don't tell them that's what you have been playing on the dancefloor between Midimiliz and X-Dream tracks.

Nice track! Minimal techno with this dark influence is really nice and driving... and i guess it also gives Dj´s more room to add their own touch on top, and more room to play with long transitions, i think this is why minimal might be so popular amongst lots of Djs. as it gives more room for them to experiment and be creative with seamless mixes, not that you cant do this with other kinds of music, but with fewer elements its gets a little easier i think.

Hey, you make a good point there. There are many tracks by Nuclear Ramjet for example that I didn't use for DJing because they were so different from the harder tracks. Now I use everything because I have a lot more techno in various styles to mix with.

Nothing new here. To think that in music influences are one sided is never the correct answer.

It's all one big mish mash of 4/4, the deeper the better imo. Techno with quirky trance'ish twists are far more psychedelic, hypnotic, playful and driving than anything I heard coming from what you would refer to as "the trance scene".
With the latter being one of my all time techno favourites.

I agree, but don't discount the tech-influenced trance that would come back to influence the techno scene! Remember Midimiliz, Spirallianz, Nuclear Ramjet
