Adapted from Circle of Shaman, by Karen Berggren (Inner Traditions, 1998).

The purpose of a trance dance is essentially to bring you to a place in the sacred zone where the spirits can reach you. Your body becomes the instrument, a direct link to spirit within and without, and responds back as gateways to the numinous begin to open. Trance dance is a form of active meditation through authentic movement. It is a journey to the essential self.

From the beginnings of recorded history we find evidence of dance. It seems that our original relationship to dancing was for the purpose of worship and healing. In this ancient time our ancestors viewed nature and all of its elements as an expression of God. To duplicate or mimic nature through movement and sounds was their first and highest way to connect with spirit, and was the origin of dance.

In more ancient times trance dance rituals were done primarily at night because darkness was a necessary context for participants to focus on their inner experience or visions. Darkness creates a state of suspension or stopping time, an altered state or trance state where there is no one but one's self. It is within this inner journey that we connect with spirit and the truths it reveals.

By dancing within the seclusion of darkness we discover parallel realities where solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems are possible. Through trance dance we disappear, become more like our spirit, and simultaneously less attached to our difficulties, making it possible at these moments to let these problems go, we utilize the body as a vehicle to set the momentum in motion. We can call Trance Dance 'Meditation in Motion' It is not uncommon that spontaneous healing occurs during and after a trance dance session.

When we Dance we dace bold we dance wild we explore our shamanic self we enter into an extraordinary reality where we can shape shift and become the animal spirit that is within us the one we retrieve and nurture, we mimic our ancestors and we dance like we all have been dancing for thousands of years. We allow or give ourselves permission to experience and explore the duality that is within us the masculine and feminine we explore our sensual self and we dance like the wind, we float like a single feather and we get transported to play with the elements of nature. We enter a darkness so deep so intense that we get completely lost and inundated by it, a darkness where sound and silence are the same this is the place the melting pot of all there is, out of these darkness comes inspirations, memories, ancient visions and healing.

We enter the darkness by covering our eyes with a bandana and completely surrender to the process, the music is powerful and hypnotic, the type of music that makes you go deep within, the type of music that makes your body respond to it a spontaneous way moving undulating sensually and feeling it all over your body, everything becomes electric and the wind again transports you to the earth element where you feel the rhythms of your first and second Chakra the drumming and masculine grounding energies of the earth push you deep within to anchor this energy in the place where you can use it the most, in life itself. The earth heats up and the fire begins with a single spark of inner inspiration and the body electric turns into fire wild and out of control, you experience total chaos, everything is disorganized, and the higher wisdom of the body knows exactly where to go and how much you are able to handle, in that chaos is peace and silence everything slows down, you feel your breath the breath of fire and the sweat pours down your body and the music guides you to experience that watery element in fullness you begin to move like the waves of the ocean, you are drenched in the sea of feelings and emotions, images like kaleidoscopic murals become vibrantly alive, you are alive and you feel it. Everything begins to get reorganized and you move to peace and ecstasy a deep connection with the Divine.

Trance dance, is a vehicle the means to heal from within to explore and come face to face with your feelings and emotions to see your past creations and allow your movement to become the Dance of Inner Meditation and Connection with the Self, we Dance to Reinvent ourselves, we Dance to discard Fears and move into the Creation of Dreams, we Dance to Celebrate LIFE!!!

wow i didnt read this and posted something to do with Kali Mata's Bhakti Dance which is still done in India in Kali Mandirs and Shiv Mandirs (Mandir = Temple)

I have witnessed this dance and believe me its something all psychedelic spirit chasers should see...

The Tandav Nitya or the Tantra Dance is a trance dance originally done by Shiva and Kali / Shakti for different purposes....(I could tell you the story of Shiva's Dance and Kalis's dance and what it signifies if you wish )

But yeah the sadhu dances to nothing but the psychedelic chants and mantras, inscence, sound of the shankar and occasional ringing of the temple bells....almost like psychedelic music.....

I will definitely go to see this Nitya / Dance again when im in India next time

nice post bro, thanks for sharing, very nice insight regarding the imporatance of Darkness in the Trance Dance Experience.

I myself never was able to figure out such deep relevance of dark atomsphere in the context of trance dance, though i was floating on top in terms of catching the exact meaning. But after reading the above text i can relate this to my experiences during the dark phase of the trance dance experience.

Really interesting shamanic post,I am glad to see trancers interest on that!!!

There is a middle spiritual area that works like bridge between sleep and awake,a connection point for mortal and imortal worlds,a "hypnotic" trance state that someone can reach after hard dance for hours,up on the time when conciousnes is altering in the higher states and the divine energies passing through the dancing body,a special moment where a trance dancer is entering in trance and connect with the astral and aitherial worlds, able to see visions of another parralell hidden realities, and connect self with the spirits around earth and alien beings around universe...

TranceDance's primary focus is on healing and our relationship with spirit. By dancing within the seclusion of darkness we discover parallel realities where solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems are possible. Through Trance Dance we `disappear', become more like our spirit, and simultaneously less attached to our difficulties, making it possible at these moments to let these problems go.

@phiber_optixz: Thanks for sharing the interesting post it is so true..

even though i exactly cudnt see myself more likely connecting with the spirit while dancing ...or may be i dint figure it out yet..i completely agree tht trance dance is the active meditation where one get to explore the subconscious mind n ownself...

Just found this at the darkpsyde! Worth a read

The History and Purpose of the Trance Dance

Trance dancing and indeed the Trance Dance has been around for many thousands of years. It is practiced by Shamans who use it as a healing tool and its roots are found within a variety of ancient cultures.

Musical dance is a journey in the Shamanic tradition of the Native American people, and their knowledge and insights into the power and magic of the animal archetypes, the healing of others and the healing of Mother Earth.

Simply put, the Trance Dance is the practice of dancing to the beat of a tribal drum allowing the dancer to ‘let go’ and thereby reaching a state of ecstasy and connecting with primal energy.

The journey of the Trance Dance is divided into three stages;

Firstly there is a building of trust - getting to know the other members in the group. This is done physically with movement and mirroring games which allows people to start revealing who and how they are. Next it is important to find a partner who will be with us during the trance dance experience as a kind of ‘carer’, keeping watch for what we need and keeping us safe.

Then we move to the dance itself. Whilst dancing one or two at a time with their eyes closed the dancers accept the safety provided by the rest of the group. As they go deeper into the dance their bodies spontaneously express whatever it is that needs releasing. The dancer’s chosen partner and two or three others surround them to prevent them from colliding. It is the supporter’s job to use their intuition to decide what it is the dancer needs; perhaps more space in which to dance or arms ready to catch them if they happen to lose their balance or maybe just shouts of encouragement.

Often the dancers will come to a 'point of resistance' when they lose their energy or balance. With help they can push through these barriers until they have gone as far as they want to.

The role of the drummers is similar, to match the dancers energy with their drumming. Not pushing the beats but watching closely for when a shift or breakthrough comes in the dancer’s movement and then following them accordingly. The energy creates a union between the dancer, supporter and drummer, sometimes moving slowly, sometimes reaching a peak of passionate release and then following this flow back down to stillness.

It can be looked at as a perfect embodiment of love and relationship through acceptance, intuition, support and the exchanging of energy. The dancer is given the safe space to show parts of themselves they may have found difficult to express which thereby moves them deeper into a love of themselves.

The Trance Dance ends at the point when the dancer has gone as far as they are able to and it is at this point that they are helped to a comfortable space/comfort zone by their partner who stays with them to nurture them and offer them support.

When all the people who wished to participate have danced, the final stage of the ritual begins. The group comes back together, with people taking a place either in the centre of the group or on the outskirts, depending on their inner needs.

A quiet time is then needed for the re-centring of oneself. Many people have moved energy that has lain stagnant within them for a long time; this culture doesn't offer many safe spaces for releases of strong passion - whatever type of emotion it contains. Without a proper outlet for release this energy blockage often leads to unhappiness and illness. In today’s modern Trance Dance culture many of the deeper spiritual aspects are overlooked but at its core the elements are the same, just modernised, i.e;

Shamans = Electronic dance music artists and also dj’s (see further down for a different interpretation). (Goa trance and psytrance artists hold the traditions dearer than most electronic dance music producers)

Dancers = Clubbers / ravers / party goers

Supporters = Friends and other like minded party goers

Tribal Drummers = Dj’s

Although the modern Trance Dance may not necessarily be entered into as a healing ritual, going out with the intention of spending a night dancing to a beat and feeling that release of happiness and energy is in essence the same. I’m quite sure that the majority of people who have done this would testify to feeling better for having done it so it can be argued that they have, to an extent, been ‘healed’.           Om Trayambakam Yajaamahe

I wish more parties had that kind of structure, intention, and outcome.

I have had that breakthrough experience while dancing, and it's incredibly healing and mindblowing at the same time-it's something more people need to experience.
