Is Trance merely a “party”? Or is it something more? Methinks, calling it a “party” is almost like degrading the very concept of the whole affair. Tho it sounds far-fetched, I think we would be doing the entire affair far greater justice by calling it an “occult ritual” instead of a party- no doubt people do have a good time at trance, but there r a lot of diff ramifications involved in trance that are wholly absent in a mere “party”. Indeed, trancing is almost a form of yoga, when mental, physical and psychical energies merge as one as a constituent of a single continuum. The very frequencies of the musical events involved, as Cole points out, are in the range of 8-12 cps involving an average rhythm of 140-150 bpm – this particular frequency being important coz they corrospond to the 8-12 Hz alpha wave frequency of the brain that induces trance-like states. The journeying thru the nite, riding the crest of such music, trying to forget our selves and trying to merge with the “Whole” is a methodology purely used for attaining a higher mind-state- and in that lies the ritualistic essence of the phenomenon. The highest parts of the nite associated with the most intense music is a telling pointer to how the trance experience is supposed to take one on a true journey of “de-structuring” his/her self, transcending as GoaGil says, the adverse factors, powers and negativities pulling us and pinning us down, and ultimately achieving a sense of oneness with the universe. What should be interesting is to see if its possible to attain such a perfect trance experience that its possible to actually undergo the sort of experiences that yogis and exponents of such mystiques as Serpent Power or Kundalini have- can it be possible to raise the kundalini purely in such a trance ritual?
If attention be focused solely on such aspects, the trance experience indeed becomes a purely occult ritual – far remote than the idea of a “party”…… with the DJ as the modern day techno-shaman (McAteer) who guides the ritualists thru and on the journey to higher consciousness levels…..

Psy Trance is turning more and more into a culture club for several reasons. What you described corresponds to the glorious days on the Goa beaches, but that was more than ten years ago. This spirit is still alive in some places, but not that much IMO.

Though there are that kind of threads here and there "bring back the old spiritual thing !". Maybe if there are enough good will, it'll happen.
