I know if you do a DJ style live act (you play tracks via A & B decks from either software or cdj players and a mixer) The tracks are usually always mastered- or should be. after all in dance music that's part of the reason for the mastering itself!!

If you mean taking your tracks and playing out parts separately in stems or such- really the best way to do this is with your own rough mastering for live. You could stem off everything from a group channel that has all your mastering processing- or you could have that open and have the audio process real-time while playing live... Personally i don't always recommend doing that as it can eat up computer resources and possibly cause more trouble for you during your set. There are a few artists who use the use of a rough mastering for their live side of things. I know Mr. Bill used a simple limiter from ableton and some slight EQ to general broaden things up. It's worked well for him and his style! But that's what I would recommend!           http://soundcloud.com/brentmalik

It would be a shame to ruin it with over zealous home mastering, but as Kolishin says if its unmastered it will be much quieter than everything else

I usually recommend the Oxford Inflator (+2dB input level, Effect @ 100%, Curve @ half way) followed by Oxford Limiter (+2dB input level, Attack @ full, Safe Mode @ on, Auto Gain @ on, Enhance @ 10%, Output Level @ -0.1dB). This gives a nice amount of gain whilst ensuring the output won't clip.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Unless you have some experience in mastering your own tracks id recommend playing proffesionally mastered tracks first and make some effects and cool builds live. There is still alot of possibillitys to construct it.
However its a good plan to get into mastering abit, in order to have full potential when playing live.           .

Don't some guys create sets of 1h or so for live performance ? - or is all live performances DJ'd into the next track.

I've seen some artists at festivals where I know all their tracks, but the music is unknown that they play. I assumed it was mby the speakers and amplitude that makes it sound like something else, or a collaboration with another artist.. like a remix of the original..

for the fun of it -> record into stems, cut into loops

for safety -> dj your tracks

for fun: iŽd say give your stems some proper mix n master those stems, apply some strip behind like colin mentioned.... should be sufficient.

for safety: well... i guess youŽll know ^^

so yeah... results of the "fun" method usually end up in sounding familiar but different to the original each time you play it.... no need to go fancy with weird fx n added sounds.

this method isn't reserved for electronica like mr bill tunes... in fact most producers i speak to dunno how to get that managed or don dare doin so.... though it sure adds some good portion of performance to your set

hope kinda helped, cheers....           FUCK GENRES, LOVE MUSIC!!!!
