i work in pretty much the opposite way to the loop people. i pretty much just make the track from start to end, never really repeating any main melodic ideas, and basically allowing the song to develop, instead of just playing a bunch of loops one after the other. i also try to change the mood of the track a lot, eg major to minor, key changes and stuff like that. a lot of the time i'll just do the melody + bass line + kick + harmony stuff first, then come back later adding in all the sound effects and extra little pops and whizzes to make it interesting.

a lot of tracks i hear just sort of start with one loop, then start layering more and more loops on top of it until you get a main sort of feel that stays pretty much the same with a few different effects over it and then the track ends, gets a bit boring. i much prefer the more symphone-esque approach like infected's "classsical mushroom" style.

I always fail in building trax form loops only. In most cases the loops are completly different at the end. Because the first loop sounds great as it is, but If i use to arrange it, i realise that most hihats, drums etc. have no power for beeing playd alone or with other sounds in the arrangement, so i always start with many loops and with the first basslineimpact of the song, i delete all this brainstorming loopstuff and have 1-3 elements at the end of the first brainstorming phase. finally its always the search for the inspiring element which kicks your ass, if i have found it (it mostly comes randomly) all the others ideas come automaticly into my mind and i just have to follow my mood in a workflow which has to grow. i always use 16/32/ etc bars with some breaks which are outside of the strong x/4 pattern. so my trax are realy static and i think in future i will go for some other bar-technices in arrangement. anyway listen to gms, i hate them (pop music imo), but they know, how to arrange!

personally, i start with a 16 bar bass line and use it as my anchor across the whole thing. then add a 32 bar lead and 8 bar "decorations".
usually then i lose my creative inertia so i start adding drum patterns. next comes the required coffe break and back to the next section.
and then i have a track.
the rigidity above is not required.           Work like you don't need the money.

Just improvise. The start-by-building-the-peak ideology will probably make you sound like most standard acts.

Just start with something and flow with it. If you have an idea, make it work. Much more satisfying way of work.

once again i'm with you kaz. if all would start working in the kaz way, the world would be a lil better just improvise...but a little planning certainly is needed too. the way people usually work is that they set anything around the beat/bass construction, which makes any track sound like built around the bass with the bass in the centre. but its much more fun to build the beat/bass around your ideas. the beat/bass is there to accompany the track, not to lead it. or has any one ever heard a rock tune whichs beat/bass stands in the center and the rest of the instruments only pluck around them a bit?
when i was learning to play the drums my teacher always said "shhh dont hit 'em that hard, there other instruments around that want to be heard better than you!!"
same goes for sturcture too...first find the sould of the tune, its nature, its topic. in my case, the topic is mostly something scary and haunted, usually some haunted story i read somewhere. thats what the tune is about. second, find sounds, lines etc that tell your story. and at last, give bones to the story, the beat.

aint it beautiful how many people are free to create music these days?!

I think its really amazing seeing so much desperation to know about how to create music on this site.

If we can just create music for our own sake and share them with our friends and loved ones, thats enough. We don't have to be rich or famous.

Good luck with the musical journeys everyone!

Its the best thing in the world.
