Hi,

How do most of you work in terms of track structure: energy buildup, breakdown etc. ? Do you just make it up as you go along, do you have a set idea when you start a new track, or do you even use a fixed recipe ?

Just curious...

Most of the time i use some same kind of format, and i make adjustments when the track needs it.

well, the track has to be in blocks of 8 bars. otherwise it will be unmixable in a beatmix with anything else.

in terms of flow...... i would assume to have at least one breakdown and build up.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

I Usually build an 8-16 bar Loop and add Kick And Bass Hi Hats Snare Percussion Loop, Synth Lead, Effects. Kind of like the peak of the track. Then I space it out to the left and right and make a track of it

I typically play things by ear so to speak... I will start similar to how Jeto does things, but I do one of those loops for the early part of the track, one for the mid part of the track, and one for toward the end.

Most of the time I will use at least one breakdown, but where it takes place is dependant on the particular feel for the track that I wanted to have. I actually have written a track that has no breakdown at all, it just switches up semi frequently, kinda like movements in a symphony.

I would suggest that you get a format that you like for a while, and then once you've gotten your personal flow down, start doing things a little different. Maybe bring in your hi hats later or earlier, or put in a breakdown earlier in the track and have the rest of the song steadily climb in intensity till close to the end... or something so that all of your songs don't sound like they are built the same... Keeps you thinking on your toes.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Just improvise. The start-by-building-the-peak ideology will probably make you sound like most standard acts.

Just start with something and flow with it. If you have an idea, make it work. Much more satisfying way of work.          http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Thnx for the input peepz, i was asking because i'm having trouble sometimes to switch between the phase of creating grooves etc. and the arrangement process of getting a energy flow that's just right for that track. I end up too often tweaking the grooves to death for a better energy flow, while i should really be looking at the arrangments.

I was thinking about buying Ableton Live to do the arranging in realtime, make several arrangements of the same track, and then choose the best candidate as an anchor for my final arrangement in the sequencer.

Do you have experiences with this approach ?

Boobytrip,

I've had the most luck doing the arrangement as a completely different step. I will work on my groove, building up different loops that sound good together. Usually when I have a full set of drum loops, some pads, arps, leads, and effects and only when I feel like I just can't make any more loops, then I'll move all the loops over to the far right and start dragging and dropping.

In this way I do all the arrangement at once, dragging/copying loops to build up the song or taking loops away to move in to a breakdown.

It seems to work, for me.

Hi.
I'm producing trance music for 8 years, working with Pulsar soundcard and using Cubase SX.

When I start a new track I usually begin with 2 patterns loop, which included the main rhythm - kick, snares, hihats, baseline, and I add more and more sounds until I fill that this loop can be stand alone in the track, somewhere.....

Then I put it somewhee and start built the begining and slowly but safely it becomes a track......

Starting building the track when you already have the peak is like admitting you can't do any better than that. Sucks for you if that's what you think, and sucks for you if that's what you want.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

That peak you guys are talking about is good for testing the early setup for a new track. You play with it a bit and get to know different parts characteristics. This is the time you get posible relationships between them (what sits good on what and what just wont sit together).

Its very tempting to use this peak in the track, but (imo) this exectly is the part that will kill the complexety and interest.
