Track scale not based on kick note?

I've always based the scale of the track I'm writing on my kick note. Has/does anyone base their track scale on something else and just make sure that the kick note fits the scale (ie: choosing a scale that makes your kick note the harmonic 5th)? I don't have any other thoughts on this/know if it's useful/a good idea, I was just curious. Let me know, thanks!           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

From my epxerience, a long as you find that one note of the bassline, that fits your kick, you can play any scale.
