hi..

i have my samson resolv monitors (they sound quite ok) and i make my music with them. everything sounds ok as it is. then i put on the headphones to rehear my track and HOLY CRAP it sounds soooo awful.
the headphones are just some sennheiser for 50euros and not really meant for producing but they are not THAT bad. who of them shall i trust?

if u could listen to my track ive made today and tell me that it sounds quite ok? especially kick+baseline sounds so awful in my headphones. as if the base would be far to deep and on the wrong position in the piano roll o.O

thanks in advance, im open for any advice

somthing wrong with the link,,, use your headfones as a qick reference, if it sounds bad in your headfones it could sound the same on another system,, what is your track like refereced to another track made by another artist?

Both. I had the same problem some years ago. My tracks sounded one way on monitors and another in headphones, usually better on the monitors.

It was only when I tried playing it on yet more systems (the car stereo etc) just to find out that the track could sound a third and a fourth way while all released tracks sounded the same everywhere that I realized it was my production, not the listening gear.

So my advice is simple, keep working with it until it sounds good on both monitors and headphones..if it does, you can be certain it sounds pretty good.

To be fair though, you should try and get some better monitors if you're serious. I had some cheap Samsons for a while and they were pretty shite to be honest. I use KRK now and they totally do the job but these days I recommend to invest in Genelec, Dynaudio or Mackies if you can afford it.

another good trick is to listen very carefully some favorite track. a track that you adore! and than compare it with yours. In therms of sound of course
than do the same on the other media, headphones in this case. thus you will familiarize with the spectral profile of your media, monitors, phones, etc. Also its is very good idea to use a good detailed spectral analizer, i recomend eagerly the IXL inspector, but you should use it at maximum resolution so that it can be really handy. this way you will have a comparative points to look for.           Sound:

I'm affraid it's also room acoustics, which fooled you and made you thought your music sounded good.

I had the same problem.

Since then I've bought a pair of monitor statues and I believe I get a much better stereo field with much less vibration because of the desk where they used to stand on.

It's probably a matter of the right compression as well.

thanks guys. i tried to equalize and stuff until it fits on both, monitors and headphones. its better now, not perfect but better. thanks

low end rumble? means that the low end of base crushes into each other or into the kick?

"It's probably a matter of the right compression as well."

hm i compress the base a little bit, 4:1 ratio and 5 db threshold, something like that. kick isnt compressed.

have you tried using your headphones first(watch the volume levels) and then listening on your monitors?           "... b'om ..."

Computer speakers are great! this way you will hear if it sounds good, they will tell you if you have too much bass or if bass and kick is overlapping or has some frequency problem.. or if leads are too resonant..

if it sounds good on your computer speakers you are good to go

Dont forget crappy small radiospeakers etc! Great to find out if you have too much sub (as you will hear the obvious resonance in the cabinet)

I tend to use Tivoli Audio, its mono.           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet
