hi there,i have a bit of a problem here. i was recently comparing my track to that of a mastered track, and have discovered my peaks to be atleast -12db compared to that of the other track, it is seriously lacking in volume. Whats going on here? in the past this has never happened. everything in my delta 4x4 soundcard and cubase mixer seems to be pushed up. anyone know the problem?
cheers.

Hard to tell without seeing the file of the track in question as there are a lot of potential factors that could be involved and different things eating up your head room. Also keep in mind that a lot of tracks these days are being seriously (far too much in my opinion) compressed to all hell to "raise the volume". I often hear the arguement that this is for DJs since DJs won't play a track that is "too quiet", but that is b.s. since that is what the trim knob on you DJ mixer is there for. Anyways, when comparing your track to something mastered, it is also important to compare it to something mastered "well" (i.e. still has some dynamics left, etc), as something mastered to sound its best will almost always seem to be a little lower in overall volume than something mastered to be as loud as all the other tracks out there.

something still leaves me curious about this problem. like i cant even turn my halion all the way up to reach even near the volume of say a kick for example in other tracks, same goes for synths and trilogy .is there some kind of configuration in cubase which could prevent this or even soundcard setting? i have a m-audio delta 4x4.
hope you can help. |

seems like your mixdowns are put down because you havent balanced the mastervolume of cubase to maximum under 0dbFS ?
to draw circles about the problem, load the mastered track from another artist into your cubase-arrangement and see if there is a difference too.
besides of thoose technical aspects, your solution is maybe hidden inside of your mix.
if your bassline and kick is underbalanced for example your whole mix will have less weight at the same volume.

Another reason, maybe your kick is turned up too high as a result of other sounds being very loud...so you don't like how the kick sounds and this is a chain effect, you're in a way distorting other sounds. And finally, when you try to do a final rendering-copressing or maximizing- maybe you kick gets muffled because of the aforementioned reasons.
How wrong I am only the pros know :/ |

You can also route all the tracks to one group and add up some gain in the group. That way the mix will retain it's balance. Just make sure you don't pass the -3dB. And i wouldn't use maximiser, normaliser or whatever on the whole output. I'd leave it to the Mastering Engineer.
My 3 cents.

well.
as you know one of the mastering tools are Multi\ultramaximizer, this tool make's the track use the highest volum that he can get...
my opinion to you is use the "Waves L2 Ultramaximizer" on your master channes with his built in preset "Hi res cd master (or somthing like this)"
it's will make your track sound's louder...

using maximizers on a badly balanced mix will make it sound even worse...
dont you think?

Yakir, it's a bad idea. Better do what i suggested. Leave the maximizers for the mastering engineer. It's very easy to fall there.

Limiting is for when the track is finished and you want to speaker-test it etc. (plus limiting can also help to reveal faults in your mix by making them more obvious)
Always work on a volume otherwise that doesn't clip
