I remember once or twice starting with an intro before the track was done - nightmare.
Changed the intro couple thousands of times and finally, after finishing the track erased it and made a new one (intro), but I guess it is all a matter of how organized your working procces is ...

Intros should be both interesting and DJ friendly. As in pop, the goal of an intro is to grab attention and act as a signature for the song, so everybody knows which tune it is, so they can begin raising the roof.
Honestly tho, as long as some sort of rhythm comes in at some point, it's the least restrictive part of a song, and the part where you can really go off the wall or over the top if you feel like it. Enjoy intros.

Hmm.... very interesting feedback on this topic... It brings me to another subject that I have really been pondering.... Do we make music for other djs? Or do we make it for the average listener....
Lots of dj's don't beatmatch into a track, I personally do and I have come to a point in my music where if I write a really nice intro, I'm gonna want to play it.... But it bugs the crap out of me as a dancer to listen to a dj softmix into a track. So you see I am at a personal paradox....
Most of my intro's I don't spend very much time on them, because I usually don't even play them. But if sometime in the future I expect to put out an album, I should write some nice intros for all of my tracks. Hmm... Definitely something to think about...

If you want more floorplay, a mixable intro is a good idea. Bolder DJs who like the track will figure out a way to mix a difficult intro, but the DJs I know tend to find relief in rhythmic, useable intros. Having said that, I rarely follow the rules because I like odd intros and I'm not terribly pressed about floorplay.
Intros are a great chance to pull out the weird stuff. You should have a lot of fun with them.

True! It's much fun making them and especially for live acts I think you should make room for them. It's a way to expand your message. |

I hate it when I DJ and the intro has fade in Kicks...it's hard to find the right place to start..., so my one request... NO FADED IN KICKS!
It's hard to figure out when you are messed up on something fun and are DJ ing in front of a crowd!

Hey Ecnalab, I got the most recent truffle comp... nice stuff. I actually am a friend of Bohdi's.... Ask him or Tom for some of my stuff.

seems im the only one here that like short intros or no intros.
what i like best is the track that starts with the kick, so I can cue it in couple of seconds, and i dont have to waste time on cueing.
but when im listening at home, i like intros, i confess. |

I agree with you hip... Personally when I play out, I don't even pay attention to the intros because I beat match just about everything... When I am listening at home, I have a respect for intros, but I sometimes find myself skipping through those tooo.

Intros are nice but it is ok if the track starts for example with an reverse crash and then crash + bl + kick hehe.
but a powerful intro and a deep start with deeeeep & nice kick + bl is veeeeryy nice
it gives a better picture of the track and the track might hit you better |

guess all depends if u only want to be a dancefloorproducer.... or want to be more than just that..
like some people think along the way of .. hey i dont make breaks but they can sound nice in my psytrack.. so lets take the easy way out and take some breakloop instead of learning how to make a break..
as long as u happy urself i guess...
ill push u over the edge, and will be smiling when u cant take anymore, at that point ill push a little harder till u experience true psychdelica |
