Okidoki.. Was just thinking of the track arrangement. How many of you stick to the 16/32 measurements plan. And what are your thoughts about leaving it?
For example: I have a structure laid out now that would benefit from making it 17 bars long in stead of 16.
Is this annoying if you are on the dancefloor? Does it break the flow? Or does nobody care about it?           soundcloud.com/supergroover

depends on the music. if this is a dance track i wouldn't go that way. if this some sort of weird psychedelic trippy stuff then go for it, burn the brain

remember that if you switch to 3/4 or 5/4 the arrangement will be different.

I stick with 16/32 bars.
Because I want my tracks to be dj friendly.
If you ever played as a dj, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

For example, I like to mix in the next track after the break, when the beat hits again - that's when i press play on the second deck.
If both tracks have 16/32/64 rule, then they match so perfectly, all the transitions are on the same beat and everything.
BUT,
I play minimal and tech house, and my mixes are about 3 minutes long, I'm not sure if i'd be mixing the same way if I still played psy.

On the other hand - this is music, you can experiment with all kinds of different structures

Yeah.. I see what you mean with the dj thing. The track is 17 bars only in the part where you won't mix. So the first 32-48 bars are dj friendly and the end as well.. It is just in the middle part once 17.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

on trance, a certain predictability is important imo.

when listening some psy tunes for the first time.. it seams like I already know them. because everything it there, in the right place. and everything resolves.

Depends really...but in most cases that sure brakes the flow, personally i dont' like so predictible things, but it's better to feel at "home" than be fooled and tricked,in some cases that really work, but there isn't so original music out there and the problem is that extra doesn't fit at all.

Really strikes me bad when this is envolved in buildups, sure i love complex effective thing going, but not everyone feel that urge like creator and it's better to please everyone with old simple creative thing, then ruin everything with one bar...or series of pointless things

I think that last Vacuum stalkers album is highly surprising with all its short breaks all around the place, very groovy nonetheless, but hard to mix with other music.

In my downtempo tracks I use weird bar structures quite frequently, acxtually they are not that weird, I stick to the basic formula, but I introduce empty bars or empty beats at the end of cycles to give the track kind of a off-kilter feeling.

But I wouldn`t do it in dance music, having DJ`ed for a long time I know that I was very reluctant to play tracks that could potentially make me look bad in front of the audience, hahaha But then I wasnt a skill Ninja like some of those techno DJs, but most DJs arent...           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch
