Japanese Animation (series):
1) Serial Experiments Lain - a deep and philosophical take on the border between communication and reality, subjectivity and objectivity, with a shitload of artsy stuff most people don't like, a very hard plot to follow, minimalist animation... but pure genius condensed to 13 episodes.
2) FLCL - High paced (understatement of the year), funny (as it gets), crazy (like a guy thinking he's an eraser that rubs his head against any writing he sees), with action, comedy and a heart-warming story all rolled into 6 episodes of one of the most insane things you'll ever see
3) Berserk - Time for violence. A good plot. Lots of violence. Deep characters. Swords and hundreds of dead. Rich interactions. Choping off limbs and spurts of blood. Best antagonist character in the history of everything. Maiming, murdering, slaughtering, you name it. Awesome concept. Did I mention violence? 26 episodes of violent, sword swinging, awesome action. And not that DBZ crap.
4) Cowboy Bebop - Yes, probably considered THE classic sci-fi anime series of all times. A lot of action, a great soundtrack, cool characters, and no major cliffhangers but rather (nearly) every episode stands on it's own - and very well. Nothing too deep, but a lot of attention to details and very good writing. 26 episodes of really cool stuff going on at all times.
5) Hellsing - You guessed it - just as the name implies - there is nothing too cerebral, just vampires and the vampire hunters, only with guns, rifles, and creepy vampire powers aplenty instead of wooden stakes and ancient settings. Probably the coolest ever animated thing with any form of undead in it. 13 episodes of neck-biting fun.
Japanese Animation (movies/single-shots):
1) Princess Mononoke - while not as popular as Spirited Away, it is a deep fairy-tale with a lot of powerful mythical elements to it. Miyazaki at his best.
2) Spirited Away - if there's any way to describe it, it's Alice in Wonderland made in Japan... and with the proper attitude to it. Miyazaki's engrossing storytelling at work.
3) Voices of a Different Star - short, under half an hour, all the animation and writing done by one guy by himself, in a very powerful bit that manages to convey a universal story in unusual settings
4) Spriggan - Yup, it had to come. Cyborgs, government experiments, martial arts, guns, and all put to good use in one of the cooler bits of action ever. Animation is no Appleseed or Advent Children, but hell... It rocks. IMO the best anime action film.
5) Cat Soup - 30 minutes of textless weirdness. Sometimes funny, sometimes creepy, always... odd. Can't really describe it any better.
Western Animation (series):
1) Invader Zim - Best animated thing ever? Very well may be. Jhonen Vasquez (comic book arist of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac fame) has some of the funniest stuff anyone will see in a unique setting.
2) Aeon Flux - Yes, before that piece of crap film, this was a much darker, more psychedelic series aired on MTV of all places. I guess they have a good series every decade or so. This is one of them.
3) South Park - It doesn't get much funnier than this. Now in it's 11th season, and it seems they're just getting better with time. Celebrity humiliation at it's best, relentless satire of culture and icons, and plain old evil at it's very best.
4) Futurama - IMO, a more cerebral and better version of The Simpsons. You'll be quoting this for years to come, it's just that good.
5) The Simpsons - If you don't know this, welcome to Earth! We hope you are friendly and won't blow us the f$@% up.
Western Animation (movies):
1) Alice in Wonderland - How the hell did none of you guys mention this? What is wrong with you people?!
2) A Scanner Darkly - Philip K. Dick's writing is as dark as ever, and Robert Downey Jr. is genius. I wouldn't count this as animation, but since you are, I will too. Ohh, and Winona Ryder is hot.
3) South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut - "I farted once on the set of Blue Lagoon"... Timeless.
4) Yellow Submarine - The Beatles and psychedelic, colorful animation. What more could you ask for?
5) Animatrix - Just loved it. Better than the movies IMO. Ohh, and Juno Reactor kick ass |
