I still don't get the bottom line of the topic...
The artists are too lazy to release albums, or labels are too energetic they release many compilations?
I'm sure an artist with a finished album, wouldn't be sitting and saving it from the world... at least not the majority.
And I wouldn't want to hear an album that was made just to try and close the gap with the quantity of compilations out there - there was a competition going on and no body told me about it ?

I feel it is a bit stupid to "defend" compilations towards an artists who sure has got benefits from being on compilatons, Maux...
By releasing a track on a compilation, you could serve some of your best sounds to stand out from the rest... This way, people will notice you... My guess is that you want to stay kind of in the underground, still it seems to me that you want to get gigs on various festivals etc... This is something you get as a result of releasing tracks on quality compilations, such as on Interchill... Your name will be recognised for being part of something good. You mentioned that artists don't serve some of their best tracks on compilations... Well, I totally disagree with you there... Many artists do, because they want to stand out with a really good track, especially if they get the honour of being a part of a compilation on respected labels such as Interchill, Liquid Sound Design, Dakini etc... I'm actually a bit surprised by that attitude towards compilations...
Second of all, the mp3 thing your are praising here... Most of my friends are not so called computer geeks... By that I mean that they don't want to waste most of their spear time searching all over the net, on artist sites, mp3 sites, myspace sites, Maux site to find some good tracks.. Instead they follow a label and their releases, because they trust the quality level of their releases... This saves them from a lot of hours in front of the screen, while at the same time they get introduced to more variety on the compilations...
There are very many good reasons to make compilations.. Many of them are already mentioned by Andrew, aswell as what I wrote earlier in this topic. On Chill Tribe, I release a lot of the old "forgotten" talents. Several them actually get new inspiration from this, when I push them into their studios again... I like the idea of gathering several of the most talented ambient/downbeat/dub artists into one pool, such as Interchill do... Then the family can push the limit forward, friendships can be made, connections between the artists, interesting collaborations, the quality level be pushed upwards, and the listeners have a better overview of what their favourite artists are up to...
You also blame the label managers/compilers for doing so to get gigs... Well, that can be the reward for all the work for some compilers, but very few does it just for that... I myself, have taken a break from gigs to focus more on the label.. When people ask me now if I want to play on some festival, I usually recommend the artists on my compilations instead... Good deal for promoting my label AND to get the artists some gigs... I know several compilers/label managers who never go out playing themself, so I think your attack on the compilers is pretty unfair... I also think it's a positive thing that the compilers get dj gigs... I love to hear unreleased variety of music from my favourite labels, something I only get from hearing a compilers dj set.
And to your offtopic discussion: No reason to brag around here on who heard the first good track first etc... I also bought the Music album by Plastikman in 1994. What has that to do with for or against compilations? Sonica/Indica spam??? LOL While we are at the spamming, the three next releases on Chill Tribe will be artist albums...

Ok, to help with any confusion, I think I have figured out what Mauxuam is saying by supplying proper quotes above and then translating his psuedo-english into a cohesive idea...
Translation:
I think comps are a big waste of time, energy, and resources BUT I have tracks that are ready to be licensed to any willing labels out there who contact me after reading my complaints.
Even though I think there enough comps out there already, I'm more than willing to license my tracks to labels who will ultimately manufacture a compilation containing any tracks sold.
As far as listeners are concerned, I don't have an album ready, but if any labels are reading this, I do have an album ready. Sorry, it just took me a couple days to remember. I know I've already said that there are too many comps, but let me remind you that I have a lot of new tracks consisting of many styles and flavours.
*Intermission*
Sonica. Sonica? yeah, Sonica. Did I say Sonica? Yeah, man, I'm gonna ask that monorobert what he thinks about all this at SONICA! Then we'll REALLY know what this was all about and who really knows whether music should be stories, or made into comps, or whether future music should be chewed out of wood by beavers. *Intermission complete*
Ok, so by now, I think have made myself clear. I think that too many comps are coming out, and there needs to be more artists albums. I don't have an album artist ready, but then again I do. It should be ready for download soon at my website where you can donwload track, but I don't want this to be a self-promo thread, so don't go to my website and download the tracks that I don't want to be self-promoting in this thead. What tracks? The NEW ones that are not so chill. Or maybe I mean the ones that are chill. Or maybe I mean the plasitc strips I play with my toy race cars on. Anyways, too many comps are cluttering the scene BUT I have a lot of new tracks ready to be licensed to labels who want to put out COMPS. All in all, there are WAAAAAY too many comps out there. I just want to license my tracks to labels for comps so that I can help reduce the flow of the comps coming out.
Thanks for understanding everyone,
Peace and Cosmic love, even though I'm a PUNK.
Cheers,
Mauxuam.

Randulon, of course I'm a professional translator. Why else would I have taken the time to do this? To point out blatant contradictions that no one else seems to mind? I don't think so.

Ok, giving it my best shot here....

Phil, rushing is never good, but WHEN do we get to see an Agalactia album? You've been dabbling on comps for too long... there are so many coming out now you'll surely drown in them if you don't compose an album to use as a lifeboat.
