I dont understand where this concept of a track having to be part of a "story" comes from. This is a pretty much hippy concept of music spread out by Djs/journalists/invloved with the psy culture.
Many electronic artists, especially the ones that many people recently seems to have "discovered" as innovative ,will disagree with this "journey" concept.

ehm...I am almost embarassed in answering you man...I may sound like an old fashion hippy but you sound like somebody who worked too long for a market research company...

You should feel embarassing for deliberately quote just part of my statement. But then again we all know where is the origin of strumentalizing quotes |

What forum is this..classic music forum, Folk???
MP3 is not a valid format, for me anyway...I was referring, mostly, to the WAV format in Beatport for instance.
The people I spoke about this the first time were actually 2 respectd label managers, that was for the record, and everybody who knows who I am , my concept about music, storytelling and the way I feel about hippie bullshit...and it's being like this over the last 10 years, about 50 festivals, 100's of parties, 2 labels and so on, thank you very much.
Say no more.
Maux NEVER said no more compilations for God'sake...just too much compilations and pretty much no albums.
BTW...to call Maux a "new" artist is almost a favor to him. ;-)

I agree with Justin, the cd format is on its way to the grave, there is a decline of 20% sales this years 1st quarter compare to last years 1st quarter for the whole music industry and it is more for small/underground labels.

referred as you can easly read in plain english to the "whole music industry",thank you.

Cant really tell why you are getting defensive. On the same post that you and Mauxuam are quoting I also wrote:
"I am not saying that the idea of a "musical trip" is wrong, but lets not judge every release on this basis."
Which means not every album must have be a "journey" to be good as I was feeling from previous statements.
People should really read the entire post before rushing up with an answer.
I hear where you from,no need to make a list, this is not a contest.
Appreciate the fact there is people out there with a different background.

Again, we're in a about ambient&chillout section in a Psytrance forum.
So...
Without journey an album in this scene is as pointless as the endless crappy compilations around.
And My background is in answer to that statement of yours saying that the people I get to speak about certain things don't come for the music industry=Know nothing.
Not the case

No need really to keep on reminding which forum we are in Justin. You should try to elaborate a bit more your points instead of getting snappy pointing out things(wrongly as I showeed you in my previouse post) when no needed.
There is no rule saying that a chill out album must be a "journey" really. It depends of course the meaning we are giving to the word "journey",as we define "journey" however we like.
I dont really understand how people can say an album is crap.I think its a very pretentious statement, especially since most part of time i hear this said by people that actually dont produce music.
Most of the artists out there put much effort in their work, and you stepping out and saying that it is crap because doesnt follow a supposedely expected "journey" is plain arrogance

You should have given the background of the people you talked too then, not your own.ahhh egos
Well Im sure you are aware there are many other people working in the industry at different levels and with different visions.Well unless you thought the 2 you talked to were the only two exisiting on planet earth (^.-)

Koalakube, won't dont you use some of your finger energy and type me an email explaining what you want me to create for your "album" cover art. If you really want to contest Mauxuam's topic/opinion, then help me get your album completed.

Nope...I never said the albums were crap, most compilations are, just said the albums like this are pointless (to me anyway)
And that conversation with this 2 people was the first of a constant loop with many label managers, listeners, producers, cab drivers, and so on, many are common friends Matt...however this is the end of an interesting thread and it has become a pointless game of quotting and twisting words.
Congratulations

some interesting stuff here
a podcast can be thought up and distributed within a very short time, but with comps we are pitching forward months into the future - and hoping that the sounds we license now remain crucial and compelling when we release them 5-6 months away.
as regards the theme or direction ... comps allow us to explore certain sounds and the liminal areas where they intersect and cross pollinate with other sounds... with the type of music we collectively like there is a lot of material and possibilities.
having a theme is not a bad idea if you want the comp to be distinct - though being distinct doesn't necessarily also mean being good.
instead of voicing an opinion about how I believe dub to be foundational to the music we love now, we can release a comp of dub and try to express the idea in reality. action over opinion. The compiler also has a certain amount of artistic intention and the sequence of releases also tells its own story.
comps also allow us to build a relationship with an artist and this is a very important point for both label and artist - it builds trust and sometimes friendship. It is good to have a firm foundation from which to then do more work - like an artist album.
indeed quasga is right about mastering being critical - though in some cases with comps some artists don't end up being happy with the treatment given to their masters. c'est la vie - not everyone supplies masters of the same quality.
from a business perspective artist albums make most sense - there is generally more licensing activity on an artist album than on a comp, and in these days you need also to sub license in order to recoup advances / make any money at all. [or pay insultingly low advances]
from an admin sense on an artist album you only have to deal with one person who you probably already know as opposed to 10-12 - which is much simpler.
-----
from time to time a comp will really hit the mark - one fave is tone tales for tomorrow two - ninja tune... what a classic - also the first sky dancing on dakini... also planet dub

I think the biggest drop is it doesn't matter if its a comp or an artist album as long as its good music. Personally I love comps. and in my mind there are some really good ones out there...take for instance the chilltribe stuff and celestial dragon, not that I'm partial or anything There are tons of great labels putting out comps. I really like the ability to find fresh new artists or even established artist under new guises...most of the time when I get a comp. that has 4 out of 9 good tracks...10 times out of 10 I will revisit one of the tracks I wasn't so fond of and find a new liking and a perfect spot for it in a set, where nothing else in my collection would have fit. Justin..I'm totally about creating a story, I feel that is a necessity in djing and in my mind also when I put together a comp. but also as andrew mentioned ninja tunes...and warp and centre city offices all have some pretty random comps, yet for the most part all the tracks are great, and I will still buy any WARP release that looks interesting...in my mind djing creates the story, so I don't necessarily have to have my comp. flow from intro to end. As far as artist albums go...I love them...Yet at the same time I look forward to some comp. releases as much as I do artist releases. With comps that have my heroes on them like ishq and androcell, waiting for the release date is just as gutwrenching as waiting for Solar fields latest album. Good music is just good music, and with all the sonic manipulations flowing right now we are really in the middle of great times, it just keeps getting better and better...knowing that distant system cd is down the road and with new virtual discs in the making..I feel like a little kid in a candy store....theres just so much good stuff to be heard the only limitations I guess is the old mula exchange. In hindsight tho..be it comp. or artist label its like Pokemon, you just gotta catch them all.....

Pete Pan,Andrew,
yes I was thinking exactly about warp records, ninja tunes or some of the microlux stuff.Or many other compilation with no-concept,but with lot of good music on it.
Chill is a very wide genre,it includes style of music with different roots.
WHile I understand that the "journey" can be something very importnat to deliver from the dj point of view,as you pointed out with better words than mine it is not a must.
the beautiful Ninja Cuts Funkungfusion circa 98 is another example of a compilation with not a "journey" as inetnded by the most of you,but with some amazing tracks (The crow by Dj Food being one of my favourite).

there was a tune of the band "Tube" : i was punk before you were.... I am singing that today.
unluckely for quasga i got lot of time to kill while I am here in london...sitting on sofas with huge broadband...
you right...i should save energies and come here to post only to promote myself...my album is ready...buy it please...got lots of tunes available for comps...any style...many flavours...possible to remix them as you like...available for gigs anywhere...and artworks too....cheap and best...buy 3 pay 2...
my post wasn't about selfpromotion and we doing well...750 views...
met mr plastik last time in 95 when he played in italy using my glorious 909...that was a story...i still like consumed best...
i hope to chat with robert at next sonica...
...why are u going off so long with this "story" story....
off topic i would say....and if i want a story...why should i buy ur story instead of doing my own one ?
let's expose our more intimate parts....what are this compilations useful for ???....to reveal new names ???
to get the good names with their best tunes ever all togheter ???...to be a posh visit card used to get more gigs around the world for the djs/label managers who compile them???....to tell a story ???...what a story...what a waste of plastic...
should i check ninja and warp website and see how many comps they released compared to the albums ?
of ninja comps, I already had most of the tunes in the albums...
so...if you (labels managers here) wish to be compared to those ones, first release comps with great tunes from all artists who did albums for you...
about professional mastering...bollocks...don't buy my tunes...
i master them myself...i do the covers too...i am not professional even if once i was...i am not up for this pro story anymore...PROfessional PROstitution...thats the title of my next album...eheehh...
matt wants to play football...we wants to win...being mysef italian i understand the issue here...
have a nice day

i understand very little of what you've just said maux...but there are many remixs/one offs etc. on ninja/warp etc. (and just about any other label) comps that are not available elsewhere, that is the whole point.
justin, you talk about the beatport revolution and how you don't believe in this "hippy bullshit" then you say any album that doesn't tell a story is rubbish. what side of the fence are you sitting on?
furthermore all this rubbish about the death of cds...don't make me laugh. buying music is more than just the sound contained on whatever format you've just purchased (although obviously that is the main ingredient). it's about the package, art work etc.
maybe for the "psy-chill/trance whatever everybody is a dj/promoter/producer" scene the cd might be at risk, although i still doubt it, when all us wannabe djs can save money by buying individual wavs off the net but for most people i wager the cd is going to be here to stay for a long time, just as tapes, vinyl, video, betamax, so many technologies that were supposedly threatened still exist today.

Maux... i think when it comes down to it, people compile and release comps because it pleases them to do so.
you know... do what thou will and let it harm none
i think "fun" and "inspiration" and "why not ?[instead of why]" and "curiosity" are all the motivation I need. we please ourselves first and foremost - if others like the result then that
is an added bonus... as kierkegaard said - "truth is subjectivity"
It is also a process where we give up control to the people we commission tracks from: in some cases you damage a relationship if you send a track back that you've asked for. It is a fluid process where flexibility helps.
The compilers do of course get some kind of benefit from being involved in our comps...[payment, fulfillment perhaps, some gigs if they chase them] - why not ? nothing wrong with that if you ask me. Seems to make sense to me.
As regards feedback or criticism I know that one should not really hold onto what people say - whether good or bad. The feedback I see on our releases is often completely contradictory and I take comfort in that. Consensus and groupthink can be scary.
Mastering is a very big deal... and you usually get what you pay for, but that perhaps is for another topic.
it is a lovely day here on the west coast...cheers |

Actually i enjoy A LOT de chillout compilation... it's an oportunity for knowing NEW artist, and you can have many "genres" of music in one album... sometimes artists are just too repetitive in their production (not a general comment).
  we are one. |
