I think record labels are wasting time and energy this way...
after the digital revolution and the take over of the download market everyone can do his own compilation on his ipod.           "There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain will never improve, and that's here." Aldus

I love compilations, as long as the compiler has done a good/carefully/quality/well thought/no random pick job..... Which is rare offcourse, but anyway, some of us really work hard to do that... Among good compilations in my opinion, are some of the compilations you have had your tracks on...

Anyway, running a label myself, the artist has to have REALLY good tracks if I shall release an entire album by one artist... Which is even more rare than finding a good compilation in my opinion... I also think that often with compilations, you can pick out the best of the best the artist has to offer, and collect it to one piece of quality plastic. Also, I know several artists who uses months on one single track... Simply because they are perfectionists to the bone... Those are the kind of tracks I like to collect for compilations... If we should wait for them to release albums, I think we would have to wait looong...

Anyway, I still think there are way too much crappy compilations out there. But, luckily it is not so bad in the chill/ambient scene as it has become in the psytrance scene, where they release everything with a 145bpm bassline that comes in from their friends and neighbours with a computer and some cracked software.

Yes, albums > compilations!
I often thought about that before. There is only one exception for me, Ultimae's Fahrenheit series. Only because I felt in love with them. Also they always follow a certain style/mood. Many recent compilations are just "that popular style" again without providing a brand/meaning.

Many compilations are just various "names" faded together but without heart. A good compilation also is a good mix (to some extend). You cannot simply put together the tracks. You should make them one. A good album is _one_ album. The artist worked on all the tracks and put his heart in there. It all fits together and one track puts the setting for the next.

Often it is just one track I love, will I spent my money on that compilation then? Probably not. "Someone" gets the money, but I don't feel like I supported _that_ artist by buying it. When I buy an album I do it because I want to give my money to the artist (I know he does not get it all, but on a good label, he should get most). I do not have the money to buy x compilations only because I like some tracks. I don't spent as much time with (most) compilations as I do with a nice "conceptual" album.

I bought all of Ultimae's CDs. Not only because I loved the music, but also because I liked the "series". Each album fits into the stock, each album has it's own style but still it's the Ultimae-style. And the compilations rather feel like albums than like compilations.

Phew, this is getting too much text. 8)

The problem is a lot of those compilations include only 2-3 excellent tracks imho ... the rest is ...just meh ...           http://www.chillumafia.com

I don't think releasing compilations is a waste of time and energy... i guess we do it because we like doing it. There is a desire to contribute something particular - we all have different approaches.

I guess we could just do podcasts... could be a lot cheaper

Still, overall I prefer the whole process of working with an artist album more - out of our next 6 releases just two will be comps...

the same way you buy or download a digital track in compilations giving you the chance to create your own playlist/compilation, you can make the same on released albuns...

I dont undertstand the "discrimination" it´s all music

I agree 100% on this.
Doing a compilation for me meant exactly this when I worked on FST.I wanted to give my prospective of "chill" music, with my own personal approach to the genre.

And seeing quite few of the artists I choosed for it (and few other that unfortunatly didnt end up in the final version, due to various circumstances-i.e. Mauxuam and Murcof among the others) recently booked to various summer festivals I feel I have done my part in opening the ears to new styles of electronica.

By the way I dont agree with the initial post. There is lots of very good artist's album coming out every month. Not your usual psy-stuff tho.

i think compilations are great. you get to discover artists you might never have heard, a very pertinent example being the person who started this thread, mauxuam, who were it not for whatever interchill comp he was on, dissolving clouds (?), i would never have discovered. so maux i think your disdain for compilations is slightly misguided considering the role they've played in your own career and chillout lover's musical tastes...

also you get a whole range of different flavours, instead of having chicken tikka masala why not have thali? know what i mean?

i agree with both sides here (haha). With this whole digital revolution going on, i just buy tracks and make my own compilations...BUT compilations from these record labels are not a waste of time and energy, because otherwise these great tracks would not be available to me because the artist doesn't always have enough material for a worthwhile album. Even full artist albums, often i just buy the tracks that stand out to me because the whole album isn't amazing front to back

a good album is a good album. down with bad, up with good.

BTW Maux, when's your full album coming out, huh? then i won't have to go to your website to listen to tracks
