I have issues making toms sound good. Well it's not that they sound bad as much as I can't get them to fit. I've tried using 808 + 909 samples, some live toms, even tried synthing some of my own. I've been told to try pitching them up a little so they match the snappiness of the kick but I still cant convince myself. Any tips? Or am I broken? |

i had alot of trouble trying to get toms to fit before i realised i was using them in the wrong way.
use lighter tribal perc like congas/bongos/tablas/whatever running over the body of your track but use the big heavy toms as little motifs that only appear now and then.
toms can make a track sound huge, but if they are running throughout the whole track there is no contrast and you can end up with a muddy mess. Dont cut bass out of the toms or you lose the whole point of them being in there, just make space in your arrangement for them.
agree with pixan too...theres some nice toms on the thomas penton cd... *sometimes* its nice to run them through something like antares tube.
have a nice day

I make progressive so I use toms very heavily. I like to use toms to fill in bass frequency space when the bassline doesnt hit in Progressive. This way I maintain lots of energy. Sometimes the tom and bass are layered though and so I have to EQ bits from both to fit the space. But overal i like to play the toms off the bassline so they bounce off each other. I also sidechain the toms to the kick. Fitting kicks and toms in the same space is a nightmare and if the toms are the same key as ur kick u wont notice the difference, kinda lke when u sidechain ur bass and kick.
Also, I agree the Penton Cd is a must for toms. |

Toms can make such energetic fills, i know some Voice of cod tracks which has this kind of sweet tom fills..
sometimes it can be very simple stuff, a little break and wosh bam bom bim... and than introduce something new or take away something... great for introduction of stuff and vice verse..

Toms are cool for variations, also use em in the same manner as one would with "ghost" hits of a snare

Right... I hate being "Mr ask for things" but does anyone have any tom samples that they wouldnt mind sending me. I really like the toms on the fog album if any of you have anything similar. Or just anything clean and punchy. Or just any unprocessed toms.
