There are quite a few:
1. Event speakers - they come in quite a few variations.. All of them are excellent reference ( in my opinion ). U can choose between models without the amp and those with one amp and those that have amp in each of the monitors. First ones are the simplest and I wont advise to take'm cuz if u already investing money in quality equipment go all the way - if one wants to hear GOOD the amp should b flat professional amp as well - and those Event that have the amp built in give u an amplifier designed exactly to fit the speaker. Problems - they are excellent except one faulty.. The body sometimes let the sub go out through the XLR connectors or other cavities that not so well closed. This creates noises when the music works on heavy basses ;o) That can easily b fixed though, without going to a technician..
Other possibilities:
2. Genelec - Well that is the high end... It's much more expensive and ( in my opinion ) is not THAT better than Event. I also recon their sound is a bit too 'digital'. Anyways, as I said - that is one of the tops of the line and definitely worth checking out.
3. Alesis studio one - Nice speakers, I like their sound and they are quite pocket friendly... ;o)
The ONLY faulty I have found about them is that their sub is coming out from the back, and in certain studios which are not pro and it's just walls of concreit - the sound might become quite loaded with sub bass and hard to eq properly.
4. Tannoy - these are the BMW of monitors.. I don't really know much about them.. I prefer the sound of Event speakers.. But lately I have seen some red Tannoys that were really cheap ( some 1800 NIS in 'Kley Zemer' stores in Israel ) and had quite good sound to them, so I guess that is what I know about Tannoy speakers..
5. Yamaha NS10 - these are the most horrible and awfull of all BUT very important to b on a side of a GOOD pair of speakers... ;o) Why? because when u hear your music in NS10 and it sounds good, then it will sound good on every single speaker on this planet..
That summs my knowledge about studio monitors..
Salut,

Thanks a lot...about Yamaha i heard the MS5 are good..i think i gotta to check them before.
And i didn't knew event monitors where so good...i'll strongly take a look at them. thanks for the advises...because monitors are hard to test in a shop..you'd need at least 1 full day to test monitors.
Salut (you speak french?) |

Another question: why do artists use monitors? I mean that almost all people will listen the music on a basic Hi FI so why artists need better speakers? As u said sometimes you can make something that sounds good in the monitors and will sux in basic speakers...
So...why? |

There is couple of things about that...
First, the monitors we are talking about are not for sure better then quality home speakers for music listening. Mostly, these are also called 'Nearfield Monitors' and should b listened to from 1 - 1.5 meters for exact and quality sound.
The reason musicians use these in their studios is because the speakers give exact and flat sound which home hi fi systems rarely provide. If you will make a track using a hi fi system as a reference u wont know to tell how much color there is to the sound and there is a huge chance that sound created on one hi fi system and sounds great, will sound quite horrible on some other system that colors other parameters.
When certain sound is good on nearfield monitors of good quality, it should sound good almost on every system.
Last thing - this is ( mostly ) dance music. It is for playing on a huge systems with amazing possibilities that home systems cannot provide and I am not talking how loud it can b but how many more frequencies ( especially low ones ) these systems provide. Most of the near field monitors go down to these frequencies and then the tracks sound good on big systems too.
No Max, I don't speak french, but I recon I know a few words...
Cheers,
Yuli |

The answer is no..
There are very good earphones going around in the market ( Koss, AKG and more ) BUT they are no replacement for couple of decent monitors.. Why?
1. Earphones - no matter how flat they are, usually will tend to loose power in low freq's.. So manufacturers will enhance the basses and the sub-basses in the earphones ( the good ones ) thus cloloring the sound.
2. When one listens through earphones he looses the 'open air' feeling or even a 'club' feeling.. It's a completely different way of listening and we want to b as close as it gets ( in the studio ) to a real outdoor rave or a good soundsystem in a club.
Overall the headphones are a necessity in a studio because they can help to check on quality of the mix ( mind you , the mix should b good on ANY kind of reference ) and more important, they are excellent to check the so-called 'depth' of the stereo pattern of the track or it's 3D.
Cheers,

Yes - I see your point. Until now I used an AKG headphones set, which has a realy excellent sound, but I couldn't get the mix to sound right on speakers. Just yesterday I bought a pair of genelec monitors, and since they will only arrive in a month or so, the shop gave me a pair of tannoy's as temporary replacement, and there realy is a huge difference. Suddenly I noticed some open - space phenomena which had to be corrected with "phase invertion" and such... |

Thanks!
Problem is - my room is not accoustic. I don't think I'll buy some accoustic isolation, so I'll try to work something out... Got any tips for me on this issue? |

Yep,
Put your speakers around the height your head will b most of the time, 20 - 50 cm from the wall. This wall you dont need to touch.
The important things are - Put a rug on the floor ( the thickker it is the better ), and the important wall is the one behind u ( against the speakers ) u can cover it with A) one more rug B) old matress C) eggs boxes that are fit together D) wood ( any kind but no lak on it so it can receive the wave ) in any case if u use wood try to put something soft ( like parts of an old matress ) between it and the wall
U can do the same for the two other walls if u like ;o)
Shit man, I hate dealing with acoustix - but no pain no gain he he
