To play psytrance live(do a set)?
does one need to know how to dj between two of those dj thingies?
Do you need to own anyting specific to play live?some program or hardware?
Thanks           www.soundcloud.com/kabbalisticvillage

Well that depends on your concept of live.. And there isn't a uniformed standard on this.
If the live is a fake act done just for marketing tricks, then you need to know how to be a clown and fake a live for an hour and a half..
I remember seeing Talamasca live, and he was DJing his tunes and playing the synths live..
If you are playing with Ableton than it's just a matter of getting the next track right and putting in the bass, no need for beat syncing with this baby.

So it depends on what you do. If you use the CDJ's (the dj thingies) then it's better you know how to use them. Although I know how to work with them, I don't use them.

To play live IMO I think you need to be able to manipulate the sound. There is no specific hardware or software, it's up to your imagination and to what you consider to be your "live"           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

You can play live with DJ software, like Deckadance, Tracktor, Torq, etc and mp3's.           www.wizanda.com www.soundcloud.com/wizanda

And yes you need to know a thing or two, especially, beat mixing and some knowledge about harmonic mixing.

playing live can be done in many ways, the most crucial is that its a good constant flow if you play for a dancefloor.

Traktor is very nice, Ableton live is very nice, FL studio works in live mod, basically you have to test and benchmark your liveset so it is room for tweaking and having some FX possible is always nice... Practice is very important.

A good thing is to analyze concept albums and see how they go from note to note, Like braincell - Intelligent beings, the album, each is from track one to nine, The keys are:

E, E, F, E, F#,G,G,F,E

so he keeps very close range, and all tracks mix well with eachother, also almost all tracks are in 145bmp, except some in 144..

So this can be to take into consideration if you dont have very good skill on going around a lot, but check this http://www.harmonic-mixing.com/HowTo.aspx

maybe some tips for you, i hope.

i guess you have a laptop, Usb soundcard, midikeyboard with knobs and buttons, or a midicontroller of some kind.

So you got you cables, and im sure you know how to hook them up Now you take your monitor outputs and hook them up to the Stage mixer inputs, sometimes they are 6.5 jacks, sometimes Rca, and sometimes Xlr, most usual for mixers is Rca.

you hook them up to the Line in, left and right,
Crank the volume up on your soundcard, raise the volume fader on the mixer and you have sound.

So now you can play your music from your laptop, in what ever program you want. Now it is a safe bet to bring also a Cd with your music and put it in the Cd player on channel 2 on the mixer, if your computer should crash you can always just press play on the cd

Now i bet someone with more knowledge on this area can tell you more of what you need to think of, but i think there should be some thread around here with good explanations on how to prepare and what to think of

The main thing you need to play live is style, learn to wave your arm in the air, like your challenging the crowd to dance more.

Check my webpage, there's a section there with my gear. http://knocz.freehostia.com/wordpress/gear/

I like ableton. It changed my world and the way I make music, but that's for me. I think you should try getting a demo lite version and if you like it, invest in it           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

Ableton is for better or worse what i would look into if i were you. Rock solid performance (except with my TI) It has a large userbase so there is a lot of help available from everywhere and finally it´s intuitive to set up and can be configured for many different kinds of live concepts.
Funny you mention logic DH. In the old days emagic had this thing implemented called touch tracks, which in practice worked a bit like abletons clip launch system. Back then though stability was really an issue so i never considered it (and then came ableton) from logic 8 and onwards i would totally trust it to be running for a full 1.5 hours without incident, but ableton allows me more freedom in how i want to piece together my set. In the end it´s all about working with something you feel comfortable with and know you can trust (nobody are immune to major technological clusterf***s while playing live btw) i´ve had to take somewhat pricey precautions to make sure nothing craps out on me anymore ( a lot of trial and error was required)           Mastering available here:

I am not into launching clips in ableton, actually I'll rephrase, the idea of launching clips does not appeal to me, as I haven't actually done it yet + ES2 and the analog synth instruments I have in EXS24 and use heavily in our music, are Logic native.
Our live set consists an awful lot of work in the studio in order to make the live mix of each tune, i.e. remix our own tracks...this can go from simply mixing down again old tunes, replacing the old kicks and basslines with better sounding ones, reEQ leads, put some extra FX in, to going off on one and writting a complete new riff that is not existent in the album versions. After that, I bounce the whole thing down.
The put each live version tune in the live set arrangement and then arrange and automate them in and out in order to do a smooth change between tunes, then automate the tempo changes to suit different tunes and in order for the midi files, FX delay times and synced flanger/chorus/phase LFOs to sync to the current tune tempo, so whatever synth line I am playing over live, sounds on time. Then I have a bunch of software instrument tracks, loaded up with synth drone patches with no midi files, were I just jam lines in where the slow(er) attack times mean they don’t have to be quantised and will sound fine when I trigger them live, then a whole bunch of sampler instruments with vox, drum loops that we filter in and out, FX on the master channel for DJ style tricks...there are a lot of things to remember, so I just write the info on the regions (even the ones with no midi date in them) with notes/scales of tunes and general things we should not forget.
In that way I have 0 access at the order of the tunes, our live set order is predetermined. I cannot import loops on the fly, its kinda like the old school way where people would have a DAT/ADAT/HDD playing back the mixes made in the studio and then have fun jamming over.
The new stuff I want to bring in the live set in a small 8channel mixer to fit a drumpad (I have the Roland SPD-S) and a small modular analog synth for FX (planning on getting the Doepfer Dark Energy), cause I always dreamed of patching cables in an analog modular, live on stage.

For absolute disasters we have a CD of the live set in the CDJs, in case the mac crashes so we can push the fader up and restart the mac without ruining the people's groove. Something we haven't had to do so far *knock on wood*.

Peace out.

Definitely!
There are all sorts of tricks you can do with a professional sound card, but the most relevant are low latency and sound quality.

Try to get a sound card and a midi controller and start from there.           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz
