Hi,

was just reading a review of the 'Daheen - Green Chillies' album by Timetwister;
http://www.isratrance.com/cd-reviews/daheen-green-chillies-d974.html
.. and I was pleasantly surprised about a line where he writes;

Quote:
The album comes in the form of an ecological friendly package

What does it mean, exactly, and which other artists, labels do you know of that uses environmental friendly products in their releases? When receiving a album in cardboard material it would be nice to know it came from recycled paper. It would be nice to know that the plastic used in the jewel case is made from recycled plastic and the booklet and so on. I noticed that one argument for the new format CompactStick was the environment, how it saves usage of plastic. But the truth there is that it is sold in CD jewel cases, so that argument died. What are the distributors, labels and artists doing to make more eco friendly releases? I don’t care how boring this subject is, or how senseless some will find it to be. Imo it is morally important. And I know the downside about this in the capitalistic profit marked for us consumers is the heightening of prices. Want ecological food, you better pay more you stinking hippie. THIS IS WRONG!! The profit game is forcing us to pay more and it isn’t right.

plur,

I would assume digital downloads are better for the enviroment...but then again I am not familiar with the energy involved to run sites, servers...etc.

I only know of Regen Records using an eco-friendly printing process. I bought their "Tree Dimension" compilation to see how it looks. The packaging uses recycled material and vegetable-based dyes in the cardboard shell and the tray itself is some kind of foamy potato starch material. Of course, the CD itself is a regular CD--there's no avoiding the impact of the disc itself--but Regen plants trees for every CD sold, which is a very nice gesture.

Downloads are indeed more environmentally friendly on the whole. In most cases, those computers are on anyway--and the energy required to keep your desktop system running is far beneath that required to ship CDs around the planet. We had another subject here where I posted some links to studies and such... can't seem to find it though.

There is defiantly something about having the physical format in your hands/shelf that digital downloads can never replace. And as Elad above mentioned, I don't think people who buy the physical format will throw it away that quickly. To produce CD's does damage our environment I guess, but they will not create after litter/garbage which is thrown on garbage dumps to rot or to be burned. In most cases, we’re talking collector items.

I think it's great to see labels like Regen Records, a branch of environmental festival organization R.E.G.E.N. who releases environmentally concerned physical CD releases that are produced completely Carbon Neutral. I think more labels should make this a PLUR approach trendy, more labels should jump on the wagon. I think it would be very suitable and appropriate if a scene like ours that are supposed to be earth loving would do more effort to complete the whole PLUR package we so often proclaim..

Can someone list up all releases that was printed in a Eco-Friendly fashion? Surly this has to be a older concept then Regen Records?

I feel that these eco-friendly releases are created only to satisfy the mind of the overly cautious .... or those who feel they're saving the planet by buying one of these things. all a desperate marketing ploy.

these releases are also being sold to collectors and not being thrown into some landfill ... so it seems totally irrelevant. 100% recycled material would make more sense than the biodegradable ones anyway.

the tree 'creation' idea is great but nothing is more eco-friendly than a digital release.

All releases by Somnia Records (www.somniasound.com) are printed with soy inks on recycled paper, no glue is used because they are sewn and sealed in wax. Just the cd itself isn't that eco-friendly...

My first CD will just be shoved in a block of tofu and wrapped in free trade hemp. It will cost $13 USD plus $2,000 international shipping (delivered by a personal courier who uses nothing but a compost-powered sailboat and a recycled bike that's missing one tire). For every one that sells, I will focus all of my positive energy into a flower for approximately 47 minutes.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?
