Hey I wanted to ask all those who make banging trance inducing psychedelic music if they maintain a certain key or scale to their track or whether yall just use trial and error to see if the melodies and sounds sound good and maintain harmony to it.
Thanks
suli
p.s I also hear that this scale is better for this style and that scale is better for that style.
Whats the basics to this csoncept?
I know very little about music theory so any simple explanation should do.

look dude, you gotta stick to the key you are writing in. you cant throw basslines & melodies and just hope that they`ll fit! but you can use notes that out of the key if it sounds good to you.
I acutally like "out of key notes", its more intersting then the regular Major/Minor, it even give the track an oriental sound.
2nd: every style can be on every scale. but on most tracks you cant know the scale cuz theres no melody! only bass that playing the first note of the scale.

Playing off scale notes can also give a bluesy feel, not only oriental. Let's say you're working on Am, try throwing an occasional D# note in there

I tend to guide myself from the note I have the baseline...
of course you wont do a whole track just with one note, u have to use notes that combine with each other, if u no nothing about music theory trust your ears...but some basics on music theory will certainly help...a LOT

You can use any scale or mode.
one scale i have heard a lot in trance music is the phrigian mode: e f g a b c d e
You can also hear a lot of trax with the root note in F#... this note takes u high. |

Hehe, well I know nothing about music theory and all these things you are saying make no sense to me . I just play around until I get the melody I want... mind you, I'm not really an artist, I just like to play around with sound. But I guess it would be helpful to know these things... is there a way to learn these things, but is not too painful?
How am I supposed to hallucinate with all these swirling colors distracting me! |

well, all of what you guys say is ok but i think that when you write your music you only need to listen and not to think about scales and chord names. that way you can still know how to put everything is in place but you wont be working with rules that disturbe your creativity. the ides will match the scales and chords but will be alot better. |

once you got the knowledge inside you, you don`t need to think about all the stuff, you just write what you like!
