Agreed, for sure... artists need to be doing more, and they should be partnering with organizations familiar with new media... organizations such as the one I operate.
I can offer several promotional opportunities through my own web site. My main interest is in professionally packaging and promoting free releases (and I can help with everything from design and conception to hosting and distribution). I design CD covers and web pages (fees negotiable). I also write reviews, with over 300 posted to my site... there is plenty I can do for artists whom I have an interest in representing.

really nice advices
just one question:
if we put some previews (around 2-3 mins) of our forthcoming tracks onto our website and make them downloadable is it a problem for the labels?
ed:
or maybe only to myspace page? |

Indeed, nice and wise words
All artists have to work on their Promotion, if you wait someone do things for u or the gigs will appear from the sky forget it
To new Producers has full on said try to spread your music to djs you trust and play your music djs are a brigde, put some previews on internet bla bla bla (all was said)
Its not hard,
1º Work on killer music (music you have sure its a blast on your style)
2º Start your Promotion (Do it in a professional way, loose some time on it)

If you are an artist just starting out (under ten releases, no album out, no firm relationship with any particular label) then you should seriously consider the value of professionally packaging and distributing your music for free on the internet. In the early stages it is far superior to gain a widespread audience than it is to hold out for the 200 dollars from a small label that might be interested in your tunes. The #1 task is getting your name out there, but do it in a smart way!

i agree 100% ....
but you forget that most of the labels are losing money with cds...the best trance sell in france in 1998 was hallucinogen with LSD : more than 30000 copies just in france !!!!! NOWADAYS, i doubt that the best trance sell i more than 200 in france...but this situation is the same everywhere.....
At the opposite of this, promotion pages in magazines are MUCH MORE expensive than before...so what can the labels do ??????
The money is not in the sells of cds...it s in the bookings !! everybody know this...s you'd better "give"your album to a goood label ( i know there are not much left... ) than to sell it big price to a bad one....also, most of the labels now are proposing "no advance" at all, but then a bigpourcentage on the sells.....very appetizing...but , again without mentionning any name here, i know that many of them never show any money...
so before to sign anywhere, try to reach an artist who have recently released something on this label you are thinking about, and ask them how it happened with him.....this is the best advice i can give you... |

I think also one the main problem actually is that the scene is overbooked with artists not only in psytrance but also in any kind of electronic music. nowadays everybody can have a copy of cubase, Logic or whatever the program and make tracks, so it's much more difficult to be recognized than 10 years ago. In the 90's people begun to discover this music and there were not so many artists making Psytrance music. Today you have artists and labels appearing every day, and even if internet is certainly the best way to be known it's also the negative aspect for selling CD and promote artists. But I think also it's a good way to overpass your limits and try to do the best you can do. But for sure, don't think that's you will have easy life only by making music more even if it's psytrance. To have a half time job and be able to do what you like the most is LUCK!! I think it's the best option if you want to continue to do what you like. To bet only on music is certainly a mistake.

PRO
make banners so they know , give it free on your site , promote via myspace and facebook , make stickers and give it on the dancefloor , make promo cd to give on dancefloor , send copies to as many people you can arount the world
CON
banners cost alot and not effective almost at all , myspace and facebook can take 2 hours a day , stickers and cds cost money to produce. like not enough we make the music and then label do nothing. and beside if i do all that what is the label there for in the first place ?? |

from eyes of expirience , DJ isnt the correct adress.
since once someone on the dancefloor liked it he will come again to this dj sets and not gonna book you right? if they not step up and ask they will never know who it was.. need some "playlist sign" lol
and when this dj will get asked who to book he will say "me" and "my best friend" first and only then the real good music.
so send direct to labels and party org. and better to people who are both in the same time.
this is better sure way to get realeses and bookings if your music is really good |
