Tips on writing breaks?

While I generally have no problem with the doefy bits, I've begun dreading writing breaks because it's usually the part that stumps me in a track. Any advice on lowering the energy a bit without resorting to just using Absynth pads and sampled atmospheres?

delay on the kick placed at the first beat?
long delay with lfo on a bit of the synths part?
filtered sampled drumloops?

Have the kick and bass drop a bar before the break insert a bars worth of swirlyness then insert a huge crash and a loop of a trip hop beat which you gradually slice and dice to build up energy until there's enough going on to bring it all back.

Thats my favourite.

I tend to write the next section of a track and then go back to creating the breakdown that leads into it. This way I can use some of the material (Q+A, Thematic) in the break along with rhythmic buildup (filter sweep or ramp up/down.           It's the bizzo.
