Tips on starting my first track

This was difficult for me starting out, so I'll try to explain this as well as I can.

I reallllly recommend NOT starting with the intro. The intro usually refers to a lot of the upcoming sounds of the track, so it's sort of pointless to start out with creating it.

Since you're in Ableton (good choice ) you can really just start making a bunch of loops (don't bounce them if they're MIDI tracks) and messing around with arrangement. I recommend setting up the arrangement ideas that sound good so that you can trigger sets of loops from the master buttons (hit first to start all intro loops, then second after 16/32 bars, etc.).

Don't worry about tweaking at first. Accept the fact that the first sketch of any track is going to sound relatively horrible. You'll have plenty of time to mess with a bass for a few hours and work with all of the technical skills after you've gotten all of the creativity out. That being said, I recommend keeping MIDI tracks whenever possible. If it's too much for your CPU, freezing the tracks helps, especially ones with reverb and other processor-heavy effects.

Leave the master section alone until EVERYTHING is done. Adding mastering effects, even EQing and compression, will give you the wrong idea about your mix and the sound qualities of the individual tracks.

At first most people tend to do things with the mentality of "these are the resources that I have, so I'll do the best I can with those"..eventually, after lots of time, learning, and patience, this turns into "this is exactly the sound I want, so now I'll figure out how to make it". Basically, don't worry about where your sounds are coming from at first. If you can make a loop from someone else sound good in a mix, use it.

That's all I can say without getting into too much detail. If you need any help specifically with Live, feel free to PM.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

Although it is essential that you mix your track with all the processing on the master channel bypassed, try listening to your track with a basic comp-->limiter "mastering" chain simply to have an idea of how much your reverbs and delays will sound, so you know how much you should be sending to your auxes/busses. Some times you might make a lead pattern where the delay is integral to the final patch. Depending on the mastering suite/engineer, that balance will change once the whole mix gets compressed/limited to go on the CD.
I always tend to mix a little less reverb/delay in, than what I think is enough, simply because I know these effects will be a bit more apparent after the mastering process.

nice1! Very good tip. Thank You, its great thing for creative arrangement.
First: draw the story
Second: change this story into the sounds

Wow those are really cool, eole.

You should post a whole one and have people interpret it ! I would love to make a track based on one

these are extracts from other composer's works.

i've also did it, in a more schematic way :

feel free to interpret it as you wish!

it's nice to draw your own score too : a good starter for the imagination.           A noise annoys an oyster but a noisy noise annoys an oyster most.

Really great tips Eole!

I was looking for a way to start arranging my ideas and sounds into tracks, but DAW interfaces are so poor in terms of seeing (and working with) "the big picture", especially for me as I respond better to visual cues.

I'm going to have a go at creating my own intricate graphical notations..beginning with sketches, but I might see how it goes in Photoshop too
