Tips on starting my first track

I've been messing with Ableton for a few weeks now. I've got a bass and kick pretty well dialed in. I've got drumkits, operator, sylenth1 and predator that I've been messing with. I've got other vsts for reverb, delay, etc. Now I have finally decided it's time to actually create something, rather than worrying about sidechaining my bass or making my kick sound exactly how I want it to .

Does anyone have any tips for starting my first track? I have planned on just finding sounds I like and placing them where I see fit (within music structure confines of course). I am planning on starting out by making an intro, then working from there.

Any advice or experiences would be helpful. I'm obviously working to create something unique, but I like to get input from experienced people incase there's some things I haven't considered.

Thanks!

Just go with it I guess. Don't worry about sounding "unique", just follow your senses and start putting down things that sound good to you. You have to "guide" the music to start with, then at some point, the music will "guide" you.

Draw out a structure on a piece of paper

*EXAMPLE*!!!
32 bar intro
32 bar main build
4 bar mini drop
32 bar main section
16 bar build down
32 bar outro

Stick to it. work on different parts so you don't get bored..

FINISH IT. Can't stress enough how much finishing your tracks will teach you more than diving in every week and starting something new and never getting anywhere.

Don't worry about making THE track to start with....its like grabbing a guitar and start jamming to enjoy your self. After playing other people's riffs and adding your own phrases you start developing your sound. After you've gotten somewhere then you start paying more attention to your arrangements. You can write a story, or just make a peak time tune that hammers the dancefloor pretty much all the way through, or a steady builder for warming up....so many different things.
Just remember to write stuff you enjoy and have fun whilst you are making the music, that's what its all about.
Don't get depressed if you feel you simply don't know enough to make bangers cause the more you know, the more you'll train your ear and pay attention to detail and simply realize that ou know even less than you thought you did...and that's the whole beauty of it if you ask me

Thanks for the tips! I like the idea of writing a track map down like Tomos suggested.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I think that's the second time you've mentioned Cubase crashing in your posts.

There is something definitely wrong with your installation because I can run Cuabse for days without a problem, and it's obviously causing you grief because you keep mention it..

Are you running a DAW style setup - keeping all other rubbish (games etc) off your music making computer

Have you checked plugins to make some something specific isn't causing crashes (you mentioned Virus TI before I think, but the new OS is very stable in my experience)

You need to get that sorted because crashes are THE aggravation during work flow to the point of walking away from the studio and not going back until you've calmed down!

I think the most important thing you can do is get to work.

wow, making such a scheme would destroy my session for sure!

I just start making sounds, and then sequencing them.... after a while I have a skeleton to work with, and then its just puzzling until its finished, wich usually takes about a year pr tracks so far haha           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

I have some doubts...

Usually i put some vstis in the track... should i use only one vsti to create many sounds, rendering them to audio and working with them in a sampler? Its gonna take less cpu but i mean, thats the way you do it, with only one vsti?

And do you work in separate sounds, designing one sound, tweaking and them rendering to audio?... or maybe someone just take a vsti, record a long audio session with it, freaking in the knobs, automations, and them u get this long file and cut the parts u like

I know there isnt a rule, and any tip on how you are doing it would be nice to experiment

I do render most of my sounds to audio, but keep a separate project with midi just in case. As to the structures, someone here mentioned working in 8 bars then do break, or bring a change in. That helps me start to build the spine of the track. Might help you start too after a while you can experiment with it and do what your track wants you depending on your sounds etc... It does guide you after a while           Monitoring devices, know where you go

Yeah .. I have big trouble finishing things and when I do it really helps. Finding your workflow helps alot.. I use alot of custom made keystrokes for things that I do alot.. don't listen to your track over and over and over and over if it's not finished. I find i get really sick of hearing the same things over and over.. Listen to your track everywhere on all speakers possible. don't take yourself too seriously!!!
