I'm looking for some tips/advice on remixing some chillout tracks when I just have an mp3 of the track. I use Ableton 7 for production. Would a program such as soundforge help me here (if so, what all could I do with it)? I'm not looking to do a whole lot (I just want to do some basic things for practice/to have something different for an upcoming party).

i think its a very bad idea..if you want to make a remix, you will need the separated channels..and forget shit mp3, you need wav thats sure..
i dont really understand, what is your main goal, but to add some sounds to an existing mp3 and call it as `your` remix, is very funny:)

if you want to rmx a track, look for the artist and ask for the splitted channels..
its the only way..!!
Ok. Like I said, I'm not trying to do anything big or special (as you mentioned it's barely a "remix"), just was curious if this way was possible to make something unique. I was mostly trying to see if there was a way to split channels from an mp3.

There is no way to do this yet.
The new Melodyne will be able to split very simple audio chords up into their individual notes, thats just a start, what you're talking about is still a long way off.
What you could do is just chop pieces of different songs up, make loops out of different sections and come up with your own progression of the parts of the song.

spliting sounds is just impossible by now with mainstream logs.
in experimental research centers, they are just starting to be able to do this.
so wait a few years
as longhi said : "if you want to rmx a track, look for the artist and ask for the splitted channels..

now, you can sample tracks you like...
but this is not remix, this is sampling A noise annoys an oyster but a noisy noise annoys an oyster most.

The closest you're going to get to what you're describing with a mastered mp3 is in accurately warping the track in Ableton, messing with fx on that track, and adding your own sounds to it with VSTs. I don't consider this an actual remix, and if you can manage to do it, it won't be anywhere near high quality audio. It isn't a good idea to try to redo anything about a mastered sound file.

Obviously I'd be using a purchased cd, but the way it looks, this isn't going to work anyway (atleast not for a few years).

Elad, you're right.
but the possibilities will be limited

Ok, I guess you could call it a remix. My problem with it is that it can't really be a subtractive process..so you can't take this lead out from there, move it here, etc.

hey Ascension, maybe i can help you.
i show you a song in bad quality, where i didnt get a better mp3 of it:
so i took this bad mp3, cut the high/low freqs,
added a kick, bass + percussions, some synths and here we go:
(you still will hear the mids of the original, like voice and some percussions/instruments)
there where some strange things by adding some harmonics...
the whole song was finedetuned and that really fcks me up until i noticed this...
i always thought on using wrong scales^^
next thing where the strange speed 138,40bpm.
i think those things came from the bad compression of the soundfile/record and so on.
overall i wonder how good the mix is now, although im such a mixing noob ^^
but i think if its not a big thing as you said, you definitely could use this technique to suprise your partyfriends.

Be aware that if you take your remix, with the original bits from the MP3 you have, and make another MP3 out of it, the sound quality will probably be absolutely shit due to the re-encoding of the MP3 parts... you can already hear this in the Youtube videos you posted. Re-encoding MP3 = NNNOOOOO! This is the only real reason not to use MP3s for this.
