I am a NUB to this too but i tried using the usual black coloured cloth used for banners, and water-based UV colours and i am getting satisfactory results. Most important you shall need to set-up a wooden frame to stretch this cloth on it so that you can sketch and paint.

More tips would be appreciated too.

Some doubts i had is that can we mix non-uv colours with uv on the banner and would we get desired glow results.           www.d-a-r-k.net

black fab is nice ( no filling in total back ground) but reguires more thicker paint. white fab makes colors really bright. most fab works although real thin will rip easy at edges when hanging and really thick, like duck canvas (for me) comes out too heavy also thicker fab will absorb.
i suggest water base acrylics
and remeber THERE ARE NO MISTAKES paint freely <:]

Don't blow your money on expensive UV acrylic paint-- cheap stuff glows pretty much just as well. The only colors I've found where expensive paint (wildfire etc) glows MUCH better are white and purple.

I dont stretch the cloth to paint, I just put it down on my living room floor and go nuts.

I use black canvas, but first paint the design in regular white paint. (Be careful to get an even layer or it will look funny later) Then I go over top of it using UV paint.

--and remember... blacklight is very forgiving. I'm not very careful at all about spilling paint, walking through wet paint (I crawl all over the backdrops like a spider-monkey while Im painting), etc, but in blacklight nobody is the wiser. Especially on the realllly big ones where folks have to be back a ways to get the effect.

As far as hanging goes-- I'm by no means an expert, but I've put grommets in most of my backdrops and they have seemed to hold up pretty well.

Have fun

here in SA i use bulldenim fabric(white/creamish - heavy enuf to withstand south african weather conditions) Masking tape it up on a wall (perspective can sumtimes be a killer) draw the image on with pencil (based around the design which initially was drawn on paper) do all the black paint first... then move onto my colours...all painted under UV light. Wen im done painting (paint is a pigment mixed extender - a white base mixture which increases the volume depending on intensity required) When this is done, i iron the paint (essential - as some paints run or come off over time) as to seal it... then dye the entire fabric... giving a cool result usually. If you want to prep it for a party you can hem (5mm) the edges, and put eye rings in the corners... to allow tying up. OR... hem the banner, but at the bottom loop it over so that you got about a 5cm space to slide in a wooden pole which looks pretty classy, and helps weigh the banner down. Enjoy the painting experience.
