Does anyone have some tips for recording a live instrument playing. I just have a bedroom studio with a nice mic (shure sm57) and want to get the best quality recording I can. Could anyone who does this provide me with some tips/considerations? I have done some recordings and they have turned out nicely, but wanted to see if there was more I could do. Along with this, some links on eqing certain instruments would be helpful as well.

I'm recording a clarinet into Ableton through an m-audio fast track pro usb.

sometimes it can be nice to have a condenser microphone... i also have a Shure sm57, i like it for drums and percussion,

but i also use condenser for same purpose, sometimes just a room mic and a dynamic pointed close to the source...

EQ and compressing becomes very important.... also if the room is not too favorable for recording it becomes more important with EQ... sometimes you can shield the area you are going to record in...

This is one thing I would prefer to not google on my own. There's probably a ton of opinions on the subject and I won't know how to sort it out. I need someone who's done this on here to filter stuff out

Well the only way is to experiment and read about different techniques...

play around with proximity effect(

Read about your mic

Also this might come in handy for experimenting with placement and distance...

I believe they have special mics that will clip onto the business end of a wind instrument, don't they?

Im sure they do, as they have for guitars as well... but he should be able to make a good recording with his sm57...

One thing to add would be some nice preamp as this mic needs a lot of gain, even the gain on my Yamaha Aw1600 isnt enough so im thinking of getting some good preamp for it....

a guitar distortion pedal can also work as a budget mic preamp. basically you want to jack up the gain so you get a good signal on the mic, which is what the distortion does for the guitar, only for a mic, its bringing the signal up to a more usable level

people can talk about this all day, but your best bet is to just start recording, experiment, and go from there.

you dont even need a condensor, a clarinet is loud enough to be picked up from the SM57 just by being in the same room. you dont need crazy gear and technique to get a reasonable result with recording. that'll make more difference in a studio, but for your bedroom, just start recording and go from there.           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

for the clarinet i think the mic placement is above the instrument in a aslant position (not in front of it in a row, neither full vertical at 90 degrees, but you can experiment) with the capsule looking forward to the instrument and a small axis, experiment with positioning and axis between 20-70 degrees and so and listen afterward, mic placement is an art by itself

awesome, thanks for the tips guys

I have been able to get quality recordings so far just by experimentation and using my ears, but it's always nice to get some advice about things I may not know/think about.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
