in cubase sx (2,3) there is an easy way to control some synth's cutoff without having to do much automation (r) (w) or other nonsense, here goes:
simply go to the controller lane of the selected midi and insert values into the "brightness" lane. this is now controlling your cuttoff...
voila.
this works for many synths although not all, some synths (albino, supersaw, etc..) u have to do midi learn for that lane to work and then i guess you might as well do r&w automation since youre doing an extra step.... but for most synths like vanguard, audiorealism, discovery and many many more it is a much easier process...
hope this helps

now try to draw the values with the pencil or better yet for a smoother efecct with the line tool or the parabole tool for cool cutoff automation.

In Cubase SX you can use the 'MidiControl' MIDI plugin to draw VST automation for up to 8 MIDI controllers on a MIDI track, instead of drawing in values by hand in a controller lane in the Key Editor. Insert the plugin on the MIDI track which is sending to the MIDI device or VSTi you want to control and select the controllers you want to automate in the right-hand column of the plugin; you can then access a VST automation track for each controller from the MIDI track in the normal way.

a little tip.....
in the cubase sx when you play the lead (for example) the notes never placed on the right place at the midi editor so you have to place them with the mouse....
what you have to do is to press the "Q" (quantize) button on your keyboard and it's will do the work....

realy ease all the filters and compressors from being real time (soon new gear then no need to.. but for p4 2.4 it helps )

Is this "MidiControl" a native Cubase SX 3 plugin??
My tip is not really a tip but one of the new feature of Sx 3...
It´s the "Edit in Place". U don´t need to open the piano to draw the lines... U can make it on the arrange. Just click the "Edit in place" button on midi track.

Logic:
If you have a track where you've done lots of automation (say volume) and you want to push everything up or down a bit, simply select the track or the region you want to aplly this over and hold down Ctrl+click and drag the automation line up/down.
Its moves the volume fader of the selected region up/down keeping the relative automation curves intact.
