and imo it s a bad thing but with experience you use less and less your ears..i think i could get a decent mix on my laptop speakers these day..my friend that work in pro studio tell me some engeinners dont even listen ,for a example a kick they will set the eq on the ssl and all the processing even wihtout liseting and yeah it will sound great it s 20 or 30 years they do this ... ..so the state of our ears affect us less and less with experience producing,it become mechanikal... it s like equing a kick bass at one point when you know your tool , you dont even need the sound turned on to get something decent so it get harder to get fooled by the ears and make big mistake. |

It's incredibly easy for me to take breaks. I just hop on Reddit, laugh a bit - then go back in with fresh ears
The only problem with that is that then Reddit sucks up more time than is necessary !
and uhh...engineers who don't use their ears? Surely that can't be true - almost every engineer that I've talked to has said the exact opposite - that they just use their ears and go with what sounds good..but they have so much experience with their gear and their room that they can make the adjustments pretty quickly.
Anyone ever heard anything like what PoM just siad?

once someone said here to listen white noise to refresh the ears, dunno if it work never tried .. but for me breaks, listening a reference tune ,check on my headphone or a other pair of speaker the mix help a lot. once i listen on a other speaker or headphone, it s like having a new set of ears a bit, you can spot some little mistake you didn t even notice (that you would have noticed the next day with fresh ears) |

it get harder to get fooled by the ears cause in a way it s many trial and error that will influence us a lot in mixing...today i could like a bassline equed like this... but i know it usally dont sound great so i just won t eq it like this ... even if my ears like it right now, tomorrowr it won t sound good cause i already got fooled like this many times on that type of bassline. even if with time our critical liseting get better we also learn to not always trust the ears or it could be just mine that are fucked haha |

yes tiredness of the ears and head is something to deal with. i had lately a different experience with this: when i made some ohh loops in the frst hour of working, i thought they sounded great, but after some hours i heard they were not, deleted them en did new ones that now after some days still sound ok. as if i have better ears when there is some tiredness, its like the fresh ear is sometimes to easily satisfied. well thats what PoM's last post reminded me of.

I used to play pretty loud, but Ive found its much more enjoyable to keep the levels low, 85db is plenty loud. I almost feel that listening quieter has made my ears more sensitive, idk if its just my perception though, I imagine it being something like a workout for your hearing, lower levels forcing it to try harder or something...
Anyway I recommend it. Save playing loud for when you have no choice, like at a gig

there are various devices to record how loud you're listening at...but IMO something like this is not necessary.
Trust your ears - if you listen to music or mix music for an hour or so and you have noticeable ear strain or ringing? Too effin loud. Turn it down until that stops happening.
Done. No need to buy anything!
