Hey
i was working on a remix this weekend while i came across a nice alternative to the cubase timestrech (its just soooo bad)
after not getting any good results with the timestrech of cubase i just put the loops into traktor and pitched them up from 127 to 136 BPM.
then i noticed that all the loops still fitt together - but the bassline (which i made with midi) was not in tune anymore.
luckely the sample calculator i found in this forum some time ago (http://mp3.deepsound.net/eng/samples_calculs.php)
could calculate the pitch differnce.
so now i just had to change all the loops -1,19 semitones and everything fitted together again
yej - just wanted to share my little victory over the timestrech funcion in cubase hehe

well i just pitched it up with traktor - which is like pitching it up on a turn table (so the the tempo gets quicker and the pitch gets higher) and then i corrected the changed pitch back to normal so it still will be in tune of the original song.
(so how do you time streach in cubase?)
i always found the "audio - process - timestrech" funcion verry poor.. if u strech to much it will sound awefull and get verry bad quality
on the other hand the freewarp funcion is quite nice

You need to go to file->preferences->Editing->audio and choose the MPEX4 algorithm and choose a high quality...

with any virtual dj you can make the samples faster or slower without changing the pitch

Yes but there is one problem. Cubase does not always fit in the bpm with a virtual DJ transformed audio file.
And I agree. Cubase has a very good timestretch if you understand how to use it. Try the different settings. Some are better for drum loops other for instruments/vocals etc.

It's not a plugin. It's a build in standard tool in Cubase located in:
Audio/Process/Time Stretch
There should be some tutorials in the Cubase forum:

Dont use mpex4. It makes the sound muddy.
Use "realtime/mix". It goes with almost anything.

Are we all referring to Cubase 5? Cause the updated the time stretch in 4 and 5 versions (if i am not mistaking).
I use a lot of MPEX4 algorithm, however I work with solo instruments or voice overs in 99% of cases. 'Solo musical' is my option.
Clients here are eager to bring more and more text into less and less time in advertisements. Many many times I applied it to voice material recorded. Probably 80% of all recorded voice material is being stretched, either to make it shorter of longer, to fit the phrases into necessary timing. 90 of 100 times timestretch sounds better on fast phrases than an actor trying to read that fast. However if you need to make the phrase slower, nothing beats natural human reading.

I use v. 5.
You are right about solo instruments and vocals. But for loops such as drums and percussion i found realtime/mix to be the best solution.
