1. Artifakt - Drugged & Base : instantly sounds just like artifakt, with trademark tweaks and tension. rolling 16th bass, crisp hats, staccato percussions, solid framework for the lead arpeggio which is all at once epic and madhouse! the break takes us into 1/2 time funk for a second, then the heavy pulse comes grooving back, wobbly. the tweaked lead is so classic artifakt, a sound i envision loving when im 60 on my rocking chair. it gets glitched out for another breakdown, a talking duck? coming back full and heavy, distorted grindpulse. ends with some chimey flute warmth.

2. Phyx - Cro-Magnon : warped woobing intro goes straight to the solid kick line. i like the aheadness, seems to set up a slow whirlpool in my earscope. phased lead squish-squeaks delay as they spin. raising up after a quick science factoid about the evolution of mankind. remember being a caveman! arpeggi-dark stab mesh encases swirling monster orbs with big spaceboots crushing little micro-worlds, then it twists around, the talking robo-bird is preaching the technospheric anthem as the bounce drives faster. faster in that the air pressure is growing as all sounds begin to join forces and fill the smoking ocilloscope with millions of bits of data, somehow all balanced on the bent spoon which is ringing with vibration like a tuning fork, we are left snapped back into our minds realizing what a fat track that was.

3. Stralia - Airlock : at the party they have just announced that no-one can leave. a sense of tightening but allowing hips to swing, and the space begins to fill with moving wind and while im busy listening i cant even explain what very intricate shifts and changes im percieving and the next thing i know theres a fat gooey acid worm laid right over the top of the slick, heavy pounding technoid beat. by now the party is totally dancing despite being trapped, although we are assured that all systems are functioning, it seems that there is alarm lighting and mayhem coming up from under the floor. stabs persist until the air begins to escape and we are beginning to catch a breath finally now as the groove returns to its original state.

4. Shift & Slug : Apocalypse Cow : a buzzing virus readout reports funky atmospheres in a wobbly subwoofer box, the color of the box shifting with the gentle winds. small sparks of lightning discharge now and again across the ceiling. now the beetles in the speaker bust out the crazy horn blasts, and the box scoots across the floor, starting to hop. before long the box is going wiggleball and zipping as it really starts to cover ground, the floor is textured and springy, my cat is running up the walls and it seems like shes just trying to dance appropriately to the maddening funk that is cascading at us from the speakers.

5. Twisted System - Vile Substance : squelchy stabs over a deep rolling pulse, the drums pick up and a funk strum builds up and you're blasted into slam-funk before you can catch a sip of water, the music is taking over and driving your brain which will not let you stop dancing. as usual twisted system comes up with a nasty rocker of a track, metallic percussions underneath grinding and swirling launch lazers. a sound i can only describe as menacing, creating a tension in the air. i feel like i am in a pod falling down wiggly worm tunnels deeper and deeper into the pulsating earth, we reach the center and are faced with the mother metroid, who spins us willy nilly around her area as we try to align to line up the giant energy rifle to shoot gooey streams of colored plasma at the beast. theres a wild battle going on and the camera zooms out to show us that there is not one but countless worlds all enduring the same crazy adventure, the sounds are so huge now, we are sent zooming off into space with only echoes of the nightmare behind us.

6. Rabdom L - The Decoy : opens with some warm pads, the rolling bassline, and some delayed sizzles to provide a space for floating and dark bouncing. before long the pads dissolve and we are left on a scrolling grid of crisp hihats and well differentiated elements. this grows and morphs into a undeniable scientific groove. a sine blast breakdown sends everything into 16ths, and im dancing in my room. a chunky motor runs with high end business. the dark grindy lead instrument comes in with long slide notes, shifts around a bit, before long i notice that somehow it has become anthemic, the notes are evoking feelings of persistence. a multitude of curious squiggly sounds fill up the background. the lead stutters and cranks out a driving sliding blastoff for the final movement, harmonizing with another acid line, all packaging themselves up neatly for the ending, disappearing gracefully into the shadows.

7. Tickets - Terminal Personalities : great intelligent intro sample "desire supports crazy fantasies." bouncing from the start on this one, wobbly lead and well constructed layers. the lead forms some sort of siren, twisting and falling both down and up at the same time!? a breakdown gives us a bit of room to breath, but only one or two breaths in anticipation of the next part, which speeds up the bendy wiggle and stomping all ahead like. a kick roll to lead us into the mid-track recharge, where all instruments seems to go into the back of the soundsystem to talk about how to come back out and kick ass. a slick arpeggio drives and twists its way to the front, a rolling stomp drives, somehow squishy and sharp at the same time. and the finale, more with the bendy bounce. a great debut from this artist, cant wait for the next tickets.

8. rastaliens - Troll : ive been a fan of rastaliens since i first heard thier tracks a couple years back. this track instantly reminds me of thier style, groovy epic tension and intelligent layering and structure. a funky feeling takes over, the delayed lead sets the pace, the bassline gurgling and stuttering, they go for the gold, big melody is on its way! theres a building tension inside, the theme seems to hint at a great anthemic launch coming. oh yeah and as it goes, subtle at first, growing and with about 2:30 left you know that its gonna come back and slap ya before the end. the bassline responds and gets more aggressive as the lead gets busy. they turn it all wide open and send shivers down my spine a couple times as im searching for the perfect word to describe the massive space and epic qualities, funky, spiralling. and i dont have the perfect word, youll have to grok it yourself.

9. Ghreg on Earth - Output Device : very cool guy from USA, neat to think that similar vibes are being laid down on all sides of the globe. big pads and distorted washes over the bassline, very intelligent percussions. a mean ass dark lead comes in to slice the space right down the middle, little sizzly sounds tickling the edges. lots of room to breath in this one, its deep and full but theres enough crazy. its like an angry elephant, plotting and scheming. a distorted voice grinds, the pads give a sense of warmth, but they too are dark.

Very nice review here.

Haven't listened to the album yet, but there's a lot of great stuff coming out of South Africa for the last year or so.          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

I was listening to this the other day and had to comment on it. I know this is over 2 years old, but it still holds up quite well today.

I really like that Stralia track, and the Tickets one is interesting.

Vile Substance is crazy and the bassline for Apocalypse Cow is mad!
