Do you guys think that time the more time spent on one track inhibits the creativity of your next ?
I.E do you work on a track till its done or do you work on multiple tracks. |

I never ever start a track without finishing what I'm doing, I used to do that and then most times I wouldn't go back to it, and would end up with a lot of trash.
Also, I like to keep the same "feeling" during the track, if i leave the track for some time I find it dificult sometimes to get back to the same idea/concept.
So, if I'm feeling like starting a new track, its a good motivation to work hard on the one I'm doing so I can finish it and start a new one.
Before starting a new one I always do some listening sessions of lots of stuff, to get some inspiration and ideas, and then many times I won't listen to any other stuff while doing the track so I won't be influenced to go on another direction...
I try to aim to make a track a week, wich I find quite hard, but usually I do about 3 tracks a month...It depends a lot...I've done some tracks in one day, and others in one month, and that really wasn't relevant for its quality or how much I enjoy it.
Actually, the ones I make faster normally are the ones I enjoy the most, but maybe thats just because I'm not already bored of hearing it by the time I finish it.
But no, I don't think the time you spend on a track will reflect your creativity for next one...I see no connection between the two things actually.... |

bollocks... my personal opinion. i think the more u spend on something the less u are initially going to finish it on a fresh output level. english: u stare at something and u stare and u think...and the ending gets further and further away from u due to ur blinkered state.
well that's the way i work anyway, and i guess im talking from a design point of view.... so if u choose to disregard what i say then shweet... but if i stare at something too long, i find that working on somethin else, "multitasking", helps me to think of a fresh alternative for the stale work...
but hey.. use it dont use it... |

Right now im staring at my project, wondering where to take it! no solution is close, so i took a break, read some forums and stuff...
im listening to some music and it still bothers me, what should i do, i got a good working baseline in there, some nice percussion, but i havent got the a clear vision yet...
but right now it would be foolish to start a new project, coz i feel that this project can get somewhere...
so instead i will make some reversed kicks, and cymbals, maybe some sound FX... and then get back to it!
im not against working with multiple projects, sometimes you have to make something new to end something old... get the old stuff out of your head for a while.
but everybody works different... and i dont think that the more time spent on one track inhibits your creativity for the next... not at all...
but i can understand your thought GEM_37
anyway creativity works in mysterious ways... |

well just to give a counter example
in 5+ years of producing i cant remember ever only having one project on the go. usually there are at least 6 things "vaguely active". maybe only 1 or 2 will be "strongly active", the others might be very sketchy ideas which i will develop when i finish my current preoccupation, or tunes i got a long way thru with, then got stuck, and decided to return to in a few months.
my head simply cannot work on one GENRE at once, let alone one track. I get so fucking bored of psytrance after a few tracks, I have to have some dnb or ambient or something to make instead when I get bored. (Same the other way - i get bored of dnb and have to make psy).
Always need options to keep myself interested and fresh. |
