Simple Question, i'm curious as to how long it usualy takes you to finish a track? One that isn't bound by a label deadline, of course.

I find myself working on a paticular track for 2-3 months...[and most of the time i don't finish]

i think it depends heavily on your lifestyle. If you don't work or are a student and have all/ most day and night to play then a lot quicker than those who work till 5 or 6 each day. Then there is also girlfriends and wives and babies to contend with where people are stuck in some form of life schedule/ routine. Again very limiting.

So i guess the answers will vary.

I for one work 5 days a week 9-6 with an hour commute to work each way also living with my girlfriend where routine is in constant motion and quite restricting..

My last track took one month from start to completion and i thought that was pretty fast as i am normally a "track every 2 monthz kinda guy

i understood something with time, not sure if it s right for you but for me it is, when i need lot of time to finish a track it s when i m not true with myself,be yourself and you ll need 1,2 or 3 days i think.(if you don t work)

I sometimes feel the same way. But i think another reason why me, personally, takes so long, is trying 'too much' to make my track perfect. If one tiny detail is wrong. I can't barely stand to release anything. Though i believe that is mostly impart because of my lack of advanced knowlage on the tools i use, and the hardware.

Ive been producing for probably 5 years now, and i find i got more done..when i didn't know what i was doing.

hehe that can be soooo TRUE, The reason though was cus u was having fun with it all and it all seemed like magic now theres no magic, u have knowledge and therfore want ur track to be just as good as an release
therefore u are harder on yourself,

my opinion is its possible to get done a 9 min. trak with 61 tracks in one day, that will sound good but you gotta work it hard plus inspirartion helps alot,
id have to say that when i have a reason for that song wherether its a gift for my girl or a track that im doing for a special reason like i just lost my job or my girl dumped me etc, those are the moments that music really fall into place, theres all this energy and fealing that just makes things happen... dont lock urself in the studio get out there and live life that alone will make ur music much better and will help in ya track development, i can guarantee that for sure

hehe i think you really need a break, music is expression of fealings and thoughts if u just make music to make music its got no direction or feal, now if you got things going on in life maybe u met someone new or you went out and ran into old friends and started chattin bout back em days, that alone will feed you some feal and direction on your work, also it might be good time to pick up some new instruments, not synths or vsts get urself a guitar or a i dunno a sitar find a cool place with nice vibe and learn to play that, now do dat for a week
then go back to the studio and add that new instrument into ur mix as the main sound err lead...
come back to the forum and let me know if i was bullshitin u or did it expand ur horizons, hopefully that helps

If you have unlimited time and still take too long you just plain aren`t forcing yourself to finish the job.

Imo it`s the only way I finish tracks.
One day I`ll just say ENOUGH and then I create things alot faster.

But boy oh boy endless hours of tweaking is where the problem lies.

Best way of limiting yourself is to export export export.
Export the sound and remove the midi used.
That way you can`t just change it all the time.

i often need only 1-2 days for a raw track.
sometimes i even have feelings like "hm this track can't be so good beacause i have done it so fast..."

i often detect myself doing things too much by formular and then it goes really fast.

but imho a really genious track, where everything is worked out until the smalest detail is perfect (listen to shulman) i can't imagine that it just take one day...           http://soundcloud.com/seamoon

with the right set-up it can also take a day

ive seen amazing tracks done anywhere between 2 days to 4 months , its very personal thing..

also , perfection does matter , raw track is not yet "produced" , which can take extra time           www.sattelbattle.com

theres a saying that goes don't gild the lilies or something like that, its easy to get over board on something we wouldn't even notice a week from now, plus if its too clean it doesn't have feal and rather robotic, when u work fast it can help with the energy of the track, more organic things fall in place more smooth if u take too long on a track u kinda get off from where u first started, sometimes the results are good but for the most part u just get lost with direction, finish em fast
and with time you'll improve over all, besides you'll keep improving regardless since ur not stuck on the same shit for two months thats boring, and not very helpful if u work on many tracks you'll start using n learning more tools n techniques which you'll apply on the next one, justttt my opinion and a dam good one i believe!

also worth mentioning infected mushroom use to finish tracks in one day, now days they take a week
now u all tell me do u like they're old stuff or the new stuff better??? i think im gonna stick to they're old stuff to me it sounds better, no dissin theyre new stuff but theyre old stuff had more balls, end of discussion anyone who disagrees state ur opinion...
