Not that I'm advocating the Virtual DJ wave analyser as a reliable method for looking at music. But I'm having trouble mixing my own songs with others. The sound quality of my stuff is pretty good, but compare this to a commercial release where the kicks appear as tight peaks, and mine look like big mounds!

Why is this? Would sidechaining the entire track to the kick help here? I don't see why they look so long, as my kicks are about a 16th. Consequently I have trouble beat matching. How do I get my kicks to look that tight? They sound pretty good already.. |

looks like your kick is very long, maybe for an start you should change the envelope of the kick

That's what I thought - as long as the kick doesn't overlap the bassline it would be fine.
I thought a compressor was designed to iron out the change in volume over time so the kick is very high amplitude all the way to the end? Would you get the tight hit if the attack and release were set very high speed?
Thanks guys, I'll give those things a try.

Well, that worked really well Thanks.
It is all about the envelope! I compressed with very short attack and release and they've tightened up loads! I will experiement further. |

Just pay attention for too short attack. It can kill the low freq of the kick!
