Just wondering about the way you all work when it comes to keeping things in key, say for instance you have a bassline written in A:

Kbbb
Kbbb
Kbbb
Kbbb

and have written your lead in Pentatonic Minor root note A (A,C,D,E,G,A)

In practice, do you tune your stabs, fx etc to one of these notes in the scale? (yes..I know, if it sounds good..it is good but in practice, is this something you do?

Also, how many of you use chords in your compositions? This is not really an area I have explored..Am I missing out?

Cheers

NJust play the Stabs and chords in scale And if u like to use 3rd party stabs (ready samples) if the match the match if not, dont use them or build the song around that sample

Anymore I just pick a root note then move notes around until they sound good...usually start with 3 semitones, 5 semitones, 7 semitones for starters then poke around some more...then when adding other elements I'll follow the same thing, except I might copy over a previous element's MIDI clip to see what notes are in the 'scale' I'm using so they don't sound like shit.

I don't use chords - don't know shit about them and to me when I hear chord progressions and shit in psy music I rarely if ever like them...though they are on my list of things to work on in the coming years.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I also write my synth parts and fx in scale. And I move elements based on chord structures alot. Say the song is in G minor, lead is in G, another element can be then in D (dominant) and lets say another in A#. Just an example...

And I do use chords but in moderate way. I do it mainly in sweeps, abstract sounds not really in long pad parts cus that gets too cheesy soon... But chords can be really strong tool to get some atmosphere in your songs...

i don't really know chords as well as i would like... i just kinda play around on the keyboard and see what sounds good, and what progresses good... or might be good for a arp. sometimes they are chords other times not. But i also keep things in scale with the root note, sometimes ill get lucky or some sounds just sound better on a feasible semitone.           http://soundcloud.com/brentmalik

I use scales and music theory quite heavily but more often than not I get a distinctive sound if a specific note is out of the scale rather than in it.

I use chords mainly for arpeggios or figuring out where my lead should go at a specific point of the song.

IMHO, knowledge in music theory is extremely valuable and can really improve the quality and feel of the tracks produced.

oh oh oh oh i know!!!
Use your ears!
I don't know what is my bass root note is ! hahaha
I have some knowledge really no problem for me to know. But i want to use my ears !
if the root is A and i don't know that and feel like making a stab and not knowingly i put it on Ab and it sounds good then yes or detuned by some cents here or there. Or to write it in D(maj) with a G# on it sounds fit with A bass then yes! Making things interesting is the best part for me.Melodies works better by hearing then sound even:D           http://soundcloud.com/magimix-1/chilling-forest-whispers

Wow. I work differently, because i went to music school and got training (and also because i make and sell music for living) i always play chords and use correct scales. it is just essential for me to know that A goes fine with C, D, E, A, F and makes dominant seventh with G

When i produce night tracks i always create a melody, even though i tweak the sound to a non-pitched noise after that.

i always use the notes of the scale i'm in. otherwise it sounds like shit. even for non-tonal fx i mostly use the root note.
sometimes i'll have a phrygian melody in a tracks that's in natural minor, if it fits, but as always, when you break the rules you'll have to know why

still, i don't really think much about it. when you have played an instrument since ground school you get a feeling for scales

+1 even though I never went to music school and I don`t make night music. But every track I do I start with a chord progression and build from there. I even put atonal noises on the right notes and i pitch shift samples and sampled noises to fit the scale im using...           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch
