lately i've been having this slight frustration with soft synths, mainly the lack of hands-on access, and the barriers to inspiration this causes when trying to experiment with patches, and also wanting a cool lead synth to tweak during live sets, so I've been thinking of parting with some cash for a new piece of gear

so far, I have thought (and drooled over) the Virus TI, which would be the be-all, end-all solution, but it is just so damn expensive, especially here in Japan (about 340,000 is the cheapest)

so for TI owners, I would like to ask not about how great the sounds are, but rather the functional aspects, and if it is worth its weight, etc. how good are the convertors, and how is its usefulness as an audio interface? any outstanding issues with the plugin?

then there is the Cosmosis article about software vs hardware, which brings up a good point about the Novation Remote SL and Automap, which would also solve the hands-on problem, albeit with some latency issues

there is also the option of picking up a cheap second hand VA or analog like a JP-8080, SH-09, or something like that, more filling the role as a live machine than anything else

so please, any thoughts?           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

I bought a Virus C a few years ago and have never looked back .The hands on control helped me a lot to improve my knowledge of synthesis and you also learn how to play it live , like a 'real' instrument.....it gives serious inspiration.....It's obviously not a must/necessity but it just makes things less complicated if the cutoff pot is actually the cutoff pot etc.Once you have sorted out basic synthesis, it's just so much easier going about with the plugins. Two of my friends have Virus TI's and they sound phucking sweeeeet !!!You can't go wrong with Access !!! Get a synth with phat sounds and onboard effects are also really nice to use .I also enjoy using sounds in my mix coming from both hardware and software. You don't need to have a studio full of the best high end hardware to make the best music but I definitely recommend at least one.(imho)

Happy Days!

i also like the hands-on experience with hardware synthesizers and still use e.g. my virus b much. i agree with you about the "barriers to inspiration this causes when trying to experiment with patches".

i have thought about this issue myself and one thing to consider is that with the money you need for a virus ti or nord lead 3 you can buy a full-blown sequencer, multiple software synths and some required plugins and a hardware controller, which might get many ppl further than just buying one hardware synth. still, working with hardware is fun

cheers,

not sure if it worh the money, you ll mostly make leads than have been used thousand times ,with skill softsynths are good enought ,only analog hardware synths worth the buy imo but it s a bit expensive for a mono synth like the Studio Electronics or a modular .

Cubasing is like Freebasing, just with audio.
Both cost more than you can afford, and leaves you sitting in a dark room with no life, craving for more.

true, i have the sequencer/computer part (G5 Quad/Logic Pro), but you are right for the money I could put it towared some high-end monitors, or a trip to India...           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

I have a Korg MicroKontrol which is suitable for some things, but it just doesnt have enough knobs, and I'm pretty lazy when it comes to programming it

thats why i thought about the Remote SL with automap, but the integration feature of the virus is really nice...           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

I have the Remote SL and I think it would be confusing in a live situation unless you plan on mapping it to only one soft synth.

It maps synths differently and frankly isn't as straightforward as I thought it would be (you have to edit everything to your taste anyway), and I've ended up using it less for production than I expected...

yes i have this one. its reported to sound like a virus b, works like a vst on your screen and sounds very nice imo. you need the tc powercore hardware for this. not cheap the tc poco but it comes with a lot of good plugins. reverb, character, are very good also the included tc-sh101 and the tc-finalizer is ok. if you are just after a virus, get a Ti or a second hand C i would say. rekonaudio seems to have a vst editor for virusC.

Hi!
I also think in this direction, but the question is: do you really need to use all the features virus has to offer ?

I mean, in Israel, Virus TI costs 3 times Korg MS2000B.

If what you need is a synth, with good 2-3 oscilators, some effects, some arpeggios and mainly the filters'n'knobs,
I say ... maybe you don't need virus.
it is about 2000$ difference.

you can invest into DSP expansions, to have the ability to have a reacher track, with responsive computer, or really good monitors, or buy another instrument - a guitar, or another programmable MIDI controller.

I am myself debating, with my other self that says, "sh*t da phuk up, and get Virus TI Polar".
But, OTOH, I doubt I will be using 1/5 of it.

So, why make myself a fashionable, when I can concentrate on music making, with good reference monitors, high-end audio/MIDI system.

I agree it is "cool", and it is really fun.

Virus TI is also a lot more than 3 times better than MS2000B. Just compare the polyphony, routing, oscillators, filters, effects...
and resulting sound. Not to mention polytimbrality and outputs.

Second-hand Virus C will give you the best bang for the buck, I'd say. Like tokolosxi I have one and I love it.

I just got a Polar TI, first of all it is the sexiest looking thing you'll ever see the pictures just don't do it justice!

I have to say using the TI is a piece of cake, using just one usb cable & not having to bounce to audio everytime is a god send!

So far i'm using it with my RME Fireface 400 so i can't comment on how it functions as an audio interface..

It is worth it just for the convenience & features it offers..It has made it so easy to use hardware, no more damn midi or jack cables..Finally if you've heard any virus then you should know that the sounds that you can get out of this beast will satisfy all your needs..

I would suggest you look around for a good second hand deal..I saved over $800 on mine and its in mint condition, it pays to look around for good deals!           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic
