Anyone interested in upgrading their CPU should read this article:

http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/05/10/dual_41_ghz_cores_uk/

This guide allows a cheap chip to beat intels most expensive flagship extreme processor at 10x the price.

sounds wicked. tho I gotta admit that the power consumption is a bit worrying           soundcloud.com/epsylohm

haha.. brilliant.

I think the picture in this case is a metaphor for modification - but I have heard of other overclocking scenarios that DO require drilling into the chip to unlock the multipliers!

The article is long (as are ALL articles on Tomshardware) but the summary and charts are the clincher for me.

Power consumption is quite high, but I assume that would be under a full load, if load throttling is enabled then it shouldn't make much difference.

I'm doing this next payday fo'sure!

The cpu won't survive more than a year, running at voltages like this. After some time it won't boot, so you'll downclock it to 3.9, and then 3.8 and eventually it won't boot at stock speed because you overvolted it so much.
Overvoltage is the number 1 cpu killer.

Indeed. This is for gamerz wanting to impress other gamerz. Not for serious studio use.

i have overclocked my p4 d830 3,0ghz to a permanent 3,3ghz overclock and its fine never had any issues or problems with heat!
its 6 months from that time and still spins perfectly!
sometimes when running out of cpu in a track i overclock it to 3.8ghz just to listen to it 1-2 times and render! than back to 3.3ghz
but overclocking a cpu so much permanately will deffinately kill it very fast!

Not just gamers.. I think this would be a benefit to anyone wanting a faster rig, whatever the use. Nobody says you have to stick it up to the max of 4.1ghz anyway, just that this chip has the potential to be seriously quick.

As for killing it - I've had my 3Ghz chip running at 3.6Ghz for 3 years without a hitch. In fact I've overclocked all my pcs for the last 10 years without a problem. As long as you provide adequate cooling.

Besides, if you actually read the article it says that the voltage stays around the same level until you push it to 3.8Ghz, the only thing changing is the FSB multiplier. Which is what makes this chip so special.
