hey guys
i need some advice here
i'll be turning 21 in june and my dad has decided to buy me a MAC laptop (top of the range model etc) because he thinks it will greatly help my music, i guess he's been reading the forums secretly hehe:)
i will be installing my Lalya Echo soundcard into the MAC

my question is - which is the best model to buy for music creation, will layla be compatible, and will this whole new MAC package really benefit my music (and i know all the greats use MAC etc etc) but i dont know why..

please tell me:)

Thanks in advance!!!

MAC is another choice in life. If you need to move from place to place with the computer, and most of us do need that, it will help you alot.

I don't know about Layla and if it's gonna work. Sound Cards for MAC work through FireWire for best performance. How are you going to install the layla ?

PowerBook G4 with 1.4Ghz is the latest powerfull porduct - it's also very expensive.

Which programs do u want to buy with it?

regarding installing the layla - i have no clue how to install it and even if i do i i dont know if it will work
if it does not - then theres no way i;m going to give up my $1000 layla card

i'll buy cubase or logic with it - any recommendations?

the most powerfull laptop is easily located via apple.com - they have a very good site for this.
layla is compatible, but via the CardBus [pcmcia].
so your throughput will be less than your firewire i-face will allow you to have.
of course, your music will benefit with all this mac system: you will be concentrated on making music, and not on software/hardware troubleshooting.

but i would consider to save a few hundred $ on the laptop and to add this audio card:
http://namm.harmony-central.com/WNAMM03/Content/MAudio/PR/FireWire-410.html

from what i have heard the price won't exceed 500$ [i heard 350 ... i'm not sure about this]

and m-audio cards are of great quality & reputation.

hi bilbo - thx for reply
i have till june to make a decision and you guys are really helping this process:)
one things for sure..i;m not getting rid of the layla echo soundcard..the question is..is there a NEED to move to Mac or should i stick with the PC.
and which softwares should i purchase along with the laptop..also , i have Behringer Truth Monitors..so i would want to hook up, say - my mac laptop running a layla echo soundcard and behringer truth monitors, without a problem, right?
sorry if i am repeating myself.
thanks again, Chaitu.

Since your talking around $2500-3000 and unless your PC is crashing like mad the actual effect a mac is going to have on your music is going to be zero. You dont get a magik creativity genie inside the slick looking machine, if your going to use the same sequencer the actual writing of music isnt going to be any different. I would say buying a new synth(or 3 for what your going to be spending on a mac) would have a MUCH greater effect on your music.

And mac's as well as pc's crash freeze e.t.c.
Your selection of vst instruments&effects will be limited to the ones that support the mac osx (if i am not mistaken osx does not support vst's somebody please correct if i am wrong but i think there some kind of adapter being developed).
On the other hand having a pc and a mac in your studio does not harm and you can create amazing sounds just with the built in instruments of logic.
Although if i was you i would go the telxoss way and invest the $3000 on some audio hardware.

Another option you have is to check the carrilon pcs, they are custom made Digital Audio Workstations tailored for studio use. They are very expensive though comparing prices with other normal pcs but they have the best reliability and technical support you can find in a computer.

Also there is another machine based on pc but i cannot recall its name. I just remember that it was a machine in development by an american company and it was a combination of midi keyboard and portable pc computer into one sweet looking package , far to many options to mention.
Sorry cannot recall its name . I just remember how it looked(damn hot good!!!!) and that it had a price of under 2000$

there's a little tool <a href=http://fxpansion.com/> by them </a>
to adapt the vsti into osx's au's.

Ok the name of the machine i was mentioning above is EKO OPENSYNTH and the manufacturers are Open Labs . www.openlabs.com
It had made quite an impression at the NAMM show.
-Quote from their web site-
OpenSynth is a revolutionary concept that combines the power and flexibility of a personal computer with the playability and feel of a traditional electronic keyboard to form an entirely new class of musical instruments.
-Quote from their web site-

Their models range from 1900$USD to 6000$USD

Guys you should check it out, I am already in love with it , and already planning my way to the bank with a shotgun by my hand , I need a fast driver and an uzi man
