All the good national parks: Yellowstone, grand teton, mesa verde, etc
Big sur
mojave desert
I dunno, there's too much awesome wilderness to list
USA's nature is way way more interesting than its civilization
But if you must go to a city...
SAN FRANCISCO
(just be sure to wear some flowers in your hair) |

If it were me, I would check out..
New York City/Times Square
American Museum of Natural History (since you'd be in the city anyway)
Las Vegas/Strip
Niagara Falls
Grand Canyon
I also agree with the above, definitely California (San Francisco, Los Angeles)

Spend a few days in New York City, then drive across the country. Take the southerly route, through West Virginia, Kentucky, Arkansas, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona or Nevada. Then drive up the Pacific Coast from LA to Vancouver.
  ..it's just another party.. |

Those are pretty much the big ones I'd check out too.
National parks I would recommend: Yellowstone, Yosemite, Teton, Boulder/Rocky Mountain, Arches, Bryce.
If you're in the area don't waste your time driving to the 4 corners (where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona meet), it's a tourist trap (as is Devil's Tower- from the movie Close Encounters of the third kind).
