maybe if we called it 'sphongled' music everyone will know what to expect...are you feeling 'sphongled'

i like the term psybient..the combination of psy trance/goa and ambient...stuff which most people would find too 'alien' to get into (give em time and they will catch on)

So you are "only" talking about "PsyChill"? Nothing more?
Okay, why not continuing calling it "PsyChill"?
Everybody knows, what kind of stuff falls into that category, I guess. And that`s the most important thing.
Btw: A lot of musical genre names are not hinting 100 % in the direction of the music of the genre: For me "PsyChill" a lot of times is less psychedelic then alot of non psychill chill out. Or: Progressive Trance a lot of times is not really progressing ...Dark Trance is not really dark (very often) and so on ... Industrial is not about industy halls and so on ...
It is just labels .......

I don't know if anyone cares but I thought I'd share how I give genre tags to my personal iTunes library. Basically, the primary genre describes the kind of beat the track has, with a descriptor adjective preceding that which tells something about the kind of sounds the track has. I do this for playlist organization and DJ set building, obviously there's tons of overlap and vagueness, but:

A lot of the chill music I listen to is Dub, so:

- good old rootsy Jamaian dub is just "Dub"
- slow dub with weird sounds is "Ambient Dub" (The Orb)
- dub with ethnic samples and drums is "Ethnic Dub," or maybe "tribal dub" (Greg Hunter, Adham Shaikh, Makyo)
- we all know "Psychedelic Dub" (Ott, Phutureprimitive, etc)

Repeat above for various permutations of techno.

Music that is essentially slowed down trance is "Ambient Trance" (everything from Mystical Experiences to Aes Dana) - Ektoplazm calls this "deep trance," a term I really don't like for some reason.

"Downtempo" can be an umbrella term, although in this system, I use to describe non-psychedelic chill music that doesn't fit in the above categories. (Lemon Jelly, Flexitones, Tosca)

Some genre names are very bad indeed, for instance "IDM," but if an artist themselves or the music press calls certain music that, then thats the tag it'll get. (most warp records stuff)

Grahf has the solution! We make a computer analyze tracks, then through some algorithm the genre will be calculated, end of personal opinion. End of story Or not, then we'll have to fight of which algorithm is the most adequate one...wait let the computer calculate the algorithm!

They already have that (kinda), it's called MusicBrainz, which does a passable job unless you're trying to micro-categorize that which any sane person would just call "downtempo" and be done with it.

Downtempo is a descriptive definition, it merely means music of a low tempo. Chill-out is a functional one, it describes the feeling the music creates for the listener.

All I'm doing is labeling the difference between a house, trance, techno, dub, hiphop, etc beat, which is not too hard if you listen to lots of electronic music.

There are definitely some tracks and some artists that throw utter curveballs into this system. Amon Tobin for instance. A friend of mine used to call stuff like the Orb and Shpongle "intense chill" because while the bpm's are low it's definitely not easy-listening music.

I like the word "ethnotronic" that Greg Hunter uses to describe some of his Dubsahara works, but "goatcore" lol, I have no idea what that is.

Categorisation makes most sense if everybody uses the same way of it. Otherwise it`s not possible to really use it properly in conversation. This will be hard to achieve especially with the ultra diverse chill out genre. So just keep the big genre name and everything is fine
