well i think psychedelics can help producers actually.
it can teach you to actually LISTEN and pay attention to the tiny sounds, the clicks, the pops, the quality of the sound, the harmonic structures, and lastly it provides inspiration for a proper story- something most music is lacking.
story is everything
- mind you i had to lay of the acid for a bit now because i took too much over the years and developed a paranoia complex...
but its a valuable experience for sure.
and useful for a producer.
i would not discount it as bullshit mr backwards hit sound. |

I think what defines psychedelic music is
I listen to the music (while sober) and think to myself "The person who made this music has definitely done LSD a few times" |

Someone (I think it was Mubali) made the point that producing while on psychedelics can have negative effects too. In that state of mind you are more sensitive to things. While this can help you notice subleties more, it can also produce pure crap later. Something that may have affected you in an altered state may have no effect on you while sober.
When producing I try to write a story that will invoke a feeling or emotion that would be amplified in an altered state. If you get a good emotional response to something you write while sober, it is likely to be many times better while in an altered state.

On LSD I can't tell one psytrance track from another at a party because they all have basically the same bassline and then the rest of it is so full of reverb and echo that I just hear whatever my mind makes up instead of what is actually there.
So I get bored and end up spending more time in the chill room where the music is more interesting |
