I think you can only run four tracks on this, no? Another DAW; Reaper, has an unlimited trial usage time, but they count on your honor to buy it at some point.
http://www.cockos.com/reaper/

I have it, but haven't mucked with it tooo much, but it seems more that comparable to many 'pro' DAW's..           "Any act, if in accordance with the Will, is an act of Magick."

Define a Pro DAW

...and how much time you have spent on these Pro DAWs

LOL!! The "-" represented sarcasm...but in earnest I was refering to the likes of ableton, cubase, logic, etc...I say it seems comparable because I know of a *aahem* 'pro' producer who uses it exclusively (i.e. Anthony Paul Kerber of Nunc Stans, Circular Ruins)
The time i've spent on these 'pro' DAW's is not recorded, but has been enough to really piss my wife off , but through the fruits of labor on them, I have been able to take her out to dinner a couple of times, LOL!

A lot of commercial studios won't have any of the ones you just mentioned Occasionally Logic.

So what features do you think are comparable about Reaper then?

well, comercial or not, i feel one can get just as good of results from the software i mentioned above as say, pro-tools, which I assume is what you mean by comercial studio software.
Reaper offers many of the same routing/midi/vst/audio format/multi-tracking capabilities as the DAW's I mentioned...Mu.Lab, though great for a starting point, doesn't have nearly the features. Plus you're limited to four tracks...but the price is right, No?
I was simply suggesting that Reaper can be an equally good place to start, but all the while enjoying the wonders of midi/vst/wav.mp3.rex support, multi-tracking, etc, etc...

Look, I'm not that down on this piece of software. I think it's a great deal, and has enough features to get started, for sure...alright so you're not limited to four...what is it, six? If you pay, you get more. In the end, having a limited amount of tracks/routing options will prove limiting...even if it's free. And yes, 70 odd dollars for an upgrade aint bad either. I'm sure someone will find this very useful. Reaper seems pretty cool, too.

Reaper can't do half the things Protools can with audio. Have you used Protools?

Haha! Eergh...I guess i should be clearer in my statements...In compairing many DAWs' results to protools, I was meaning Logic, Cubase, Ableton...and yes, these are limited in resources, as well...but I've heard results (not mine, mind you) from these pieces of software that sound every bit...forgive the term, *gulp*, 'profesional' as music that came out of a protools lab. Yikes!
Have I used protools? The closest I came was when I played in a band that recorded in a studio equipted with protools...and to be honest, I was overwhelmed! I spent alot of time with the engineer trying to grasp what was going on. Some of it I got...much of it was totally lost in translation. The recording ultimatley was shit...and we were good, by golly!
Anyway...what I like about Reaper, aside from a pretty extensive feature list, is the fact that the company lets you use the software for as long as you need, in order to evaluate its worth to you. You can use it unhindered indeffinately...but it's better to buy it eventually I haven't used it enough to be their 'fan-boy'....Ableton's already got me spoken for, lol!

I should add, that in referencing Anthony Paul Kirby earlier in this thread, this tells me that Reaper IS a splendid piece of software! He's one of my favorite ambient artists, BTW, and uses Reaper exclusively.

Well it doesn't really cut it for a lot of things. It does of course depend on what you want to do. I am just saying I don't really think it is comparable to a pro DAW and yes I am thinking of PT when I think of Pro.

It is a good suggestion though, well I think so anyways especially for a beginner. I just think its taking it too far with that particular comment.
