Take an eq, set the q setting on it to 100 or full, gain by 18 db and slowly go through the frequency range from 20hz to 20khz, you will hear the "Ugly Frequencies" quite clearly, when you have found one, attenuate to a level where it does not overpower the mix.

Don't overattenuate as this might make the mix sound somewhat lacking.

Finding the right attenuation level is the knack... and there are no fixed values for "Ugly Sounds", each sound has it's own quality and "Ugly frequencies"...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

I'd say if you're using the Waves Q eq, don't use maximum q as it picks out individual harmonics with too much precision and if you're not careful you run the risk of EQing out things that don't need it. I usually put a little dip at 120-130Hz to tighten the bass sound.
If i add alot of gain to a lead i usually dip around 3-3,5Khz          Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

185, 234, 412, 1231, 2678

Still it are always those regions that get cut. Especially kicks need cutting imo, creates a lot of room and doesn't necessarily mean loss of power.

150-500hz: removing mud vs. losing body
1000-3000hz: removing screaming ears vs. losing clarity and pronounciation.

Thin line...

In my experience, ramming the eq to full gain with a very thin notch and sweeping about will produce loads of annoying frequencies because you've just increased a small part of the overall sound. I use a Q in waves of about 60. Your mileage may vary.

Always A/B !!

Tip - don't click on the node and drag it down or you're likely to shift frequency as you do so. Click on the actual numbers and drag down once you've found your nasties.

Sometimes you want some nasty frequences in there to make a lead or percussion sound stand out... a bit of rawness (especially if you don't have too many layers) can help make things sound more aggressive, if that's what you want.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

You mean A=440 Hz.

4.40 kHz = C#8

The frequencies that appear to sound "bad" or Dissonant are dependant on the fundamental frequency and the timbre of that instrument. Simple waves will have predictable "dissonant" harmonics based on the harmonic series, however complex waveforms will have unpredictable harmonics...

It`s the real psychedelic, random noises that appear in a mix at those strange frequencies I find.

defintly agree with mesq mostly here
its all about the frequency and timbre of each sound individualy

i like to use voxengo gliss eq or sonaklsis eq since they have analizer that show me where the resonanse is

remember evry room act diffrent about those "standing wave" freqs , depend on size , content , and metirial (the metirial is what i believe makes "country" sound - in israel its all concrit while in australia its mostly wood and defintly result diffrent eq'ing)
