i wannna point out that the scene here in t.o. is pretty small... you see the same people coming out to parties over and over again...
normally the same 300 people + a few ... (IF theres a headliner)

i was always tryin to get new people into the scene... even the mainstream...ones that have nothin to do with this music or never listened to it..., some people (some names in the t.o. scene) opposed..to the idea .. LAUGHED at it.... and it just didnt work out anymore... mostly because other reasons... but tahts not the point...

people like the music, some just dont admit it ..but most people do.. i know when i have people over at my house and theres people playing this music... ... how people react to it...
a good example is this 80s rocker dude (one of my childhood friends) that totally hates electronic music... after he spent a couple of hours listening to this stuff... he got totally into it...

i wanna know how do u guys look at this issue?

also.. what would be a good way to expend whatever is happening here now? (in Toronto)... or in any other country with a small scene...?

im originally from israel...and ive been to real parties... but now im here.. and its all very very very very different from the parties ive been to when i used to live in israel.....

very true psyrage and some people tend to exclude everyone else at parties if they dont wear the latest space tribe clothes, smoke weed and know how to say boom

Hey Psyrage,
Perhaps you could be a little more concise when you describe what is wrong with the parties in Toronto because I think the scene in Toronto is great!!
The scene is growing slowly and we are doing everything we can to try and bring it to a different crowd. We threw a free party in Jan and had over 600 people come out. Many of those people also came out to our next party and gladly paid. There are several promoters in Toronto who have travelled/lived all over and have also been to (what you refer to as) "real" parties and we are doing our best to re create those parties here.

Always remember to be constructive not destructive.

pluto,

if only 350...people come out to see droidlock, when its presented by the #1 production company in t.o. then theres somethin wrong!

also notice...its always exactly the same people.. that will come out to any psy party with a headliner, when half of them dont even know who the headliner is!

e.g. im pretty sure if u asked randomly out of those 300 regulars.... who is d-tek or stella nutella... a couple of months before the party was announced half of them wouldnt even know...

again.... my point is... those who truly understand whats going, know that we NEED NEW people! however it seems that the "new" people are not very accepted by the people who are already the "elite", also remember... regulars dont last forever!.

u should understand, im not bashing the scene in toronto, im just lookin for a way to improve it.

I'd say there's nothing wrong with "only" 350 people going to see Droidlock. Nor is there a problem seeing the same familiar friendly faces month after month. Most of the people complaining about the "quality" of the parties in Toronto appear to be complaining mainly about the size of the events; the size of the budgets. To me this is a complaint about quantity instead of quality. How would you rate the deco, the venue, the crowd, and the atmosphere at a Toronto party, qualitatively? Honestly I'm a little glad we don't have to deal with "big scene" issues like arsim overload, corrupt promoters, drug-pushing gangs, and that sort of thing.

On the flipside of this argument, I also see no reason to deny new people entrance to our segregated little world here. And yet, one may question from where you intend to draw this new crowd. For your event to be held at a big mainstream club it caused some locals to question your motives. Toronto's psytrance underground could benefit from new recruits and heightened activity, but where are you to find the right people? There's no sense in lying about it - there is some elitism to the scene here. People in general don't want obnoxious, disrespectful types to come tromping in (there's enough of that from having our main venues on Queen West). But I think this is reasonable... you'll find everyone is quite friendly to those who are new to psytrance when they are showing the characteristics the community values. And there isn't much to it - as long as someone knows how to have a good time, doesn't infringe on anyone else's good time, and shows common decency and respect, I think they'll do fine.

This does little to answer the main question though - how do you bring more people into the scene to make it grow? I don't have any concrete solutions... just ideas, possibilities. With events like Teknival occuring you've got a serious stew of different counter-cultures all meeting up - perhaps we'll make some converts. But I suppose one must consider this: WEMF, the regions largest annual electronic music festival, has almost always had a psychedelic stage. In the past they've had Hallucinogen, GMS, Orion, Juno Reactor, Tim Schuldt, Psychopod, Asia 2001, and many others play. What has this done to bolster the rank and file of Toronto's underground psy-world? I don't have that answer (though I would guess "not much"), but I speculate that the scene has long had the necessary exposure and momentum to "take off" if it were going to. We keep waiting for it and it doesn't seem to happen. The best we can do seems to be a slow accumulation of good people, and that's fine with me. After all, the parties are good, and we've got a brand new open air season upon us now - anything could happen...
