hello forum users.

i opened this thread because there were opinions that sonar discussions shouldn't threadjack the cubase thread. i think some pointers to alternatives are ok, but the complete feature discussion should go here, you're right!

so here we go, i start with some questions/answers:

1) is multiple track exporting/bouncing possible? > i have read that it is, anyone correcting me on this if i'm wrong!

2) are external instruments/effects supported (instrument control surfaces, external effect integration into normal inserts)? i haven't found anything on that yet, so probably it's not supported in this version, anyone?

3) are there any licence differences to 'standard' licences, i read something about not being able to re-sell the software (ok i don't really care about that but maybe it's interesting for someone else too)?

ok that's all from my part for now. let the discussions begin

best wishes to all of you,

Well on paper the only thing that really makes Sonar seem more attractive than other sequencers is the Active control & 64 bit engine..

Being able to control anything through your midi-controller with just one click seems really useful..

the ACT is nice, but i really don't get all this hype and excitment about the internal 64bit fp maths...           $ exp(j*pi) + 1 = 0. $

Multiple Track Bouncing is possible.... very easy & very intuitive. Also of note, the freeze functionality works well. It is quick, only freezes the parts it needs to, will import the audio track automatically, and you can also manipulate/edit the audio track.

I have not touched Sonar 6, but I've been playing with Sonar 5. Sonar seems to be pretty responsive to suggestions, and rather quick with software updates.

thanks for the answer, Dharma Lab, very good to hear! i'm looking forward to test the demo of sonar 6 and if i like to work with it, i'll go and order it!

one thing i could not find out is: can the izotope radius _pitch shift_ algorithm also be applied ONLINE instead of as an offline process, via an envelope like adjustment, similar to v vocal for vocals? or is it only meant as an offline process? (i wonder because time stretching aka audio warp is possible online, as you all know from the nice sonar 6 videos )

greetings to you,

Kitnam: No. This is a new feature in Sonar 6.

dtd: I'm not sure about online pitching with Radius algos. I'm eagerly waiting for the postman to deliver the Sonar 6 box. I'll be able to tell you more when it arrives.

As DL has allready pointed out, exporting multiple tracks is a breeze. You get this window (in v5) when you export: http://home.casema.nl/ajohnston/export.png

You can use external instruments (latency automaticly compensated). You can also use external effects but the latency is only compensated one way and it is a bit of a workarround. I have a keybinding set to nudge any recorded clip back by exactly the right amount to line evrything up so it is no big deal.

As for the licenses, I don't think there are any "special" licenses.

about the price, i can order sonar studio v4 for 90€ in a shop. and after that just order the addon up to 6 producer for 350€. is a sum of 450€ maybe with shipping.

it is realy that easy to avoid spending more than 600€ for the very fresh version?

Kitnam: The upgrade from v4 Studio to v6 Producer is €229.00. (With shipping and taxes).

PS: And yes it really is that easy.

I was wondering if any of you sonar user's could offer any tips to 'tone down' the GUI interface on Sonar a little. One of the things that I don't care for as much, is that the tracks/main screen is a little busy for my taste. Perhaps I'm just used to Cubase, but Sonar seems a little more hectic.

I know you can remove the track icons, which helps a little. If anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them....

Thanks!

I've got a question for you Sonar guys as well. Is it not possible to draw empty clips in the sequencer? I'm trying out version 5 on my friends computer that I'm hanging on to for a few days. It just seems like it takes a hell of a lot longer to get notes in the sequencer and group them or "glue" parts together, does sonar even have these types of features, any tips on this? It just seems to take too long.

Though I have to say I like the track eq's that it comes with better. Also it just seems like you get alot of high quality plugins with it in the first place with the producer edition. Hmm, if I can just figure out how to move around in the sequencer faster, this could be a decent contender, especially with version 6 now.
